Camp sites in Spain for newbie traveller!
 

I`m planning a trip in May from Santander following the "Silver Route" where possible (Salamanca, Caceres, Seville) en route to meeting a friend near Malaga and then riding up the east coast to Barcelona before crossing the Pyrenees and heading up the west coast of France to Calais. I`ve never camped with the bike before. Has anyone any recommendations for suitable camp sites? Any input would be really welcome!:helpsmilie:

Perhaps we should talk, I'm aiming to head Uk to Malaga later this month (19/20 April), and start the return trip probably 3rd week in May, riding up to Calais over the course of 4 or 5 days. Maybe not a chance to ride together but who knows, perhaps share some info as we come across it.

I never know where I'll be at the end of each day so I just find somewhere when I'm ready. If you have a map with some sites shown I'd head there. Most towns have a campsite especially in France with the municipal sites. It is possible however to be in a non-tourist area with no camping so you have to keep an eye on that. Generally though just follow your nose and camp when you've ridden enough that day. It worked for me in the past. These days I try to stay on one campsite for a week and explore the area each day before moving on. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input folks! Hi Rob, don`t think our paths will cross this time. I`ll be heading back north at the end of the first week unfortunately, but have a great trip. I`ll be checking in on HU when I find internet cafes, so if I`ve got anything to share I`ll keep you posted!

Try the campsite at Platja de Garbet, just north of Llanca, right on the beach, gorgeous views & twists coming back into France on your way north!

Then 3h north over the Pyrenees in France BandB-Camping-Chambres d'hôtes near Carcassonne

Quadad rodrigo is a nice camp site very cheap , with a river next to it and a huge castle next to it, its the only one in town and has soft soil to pitch your tents with the rest of spain is rock hard baked earth concrete or stone.

Well I have to say I'm appreciating this thread. So far I've learnt about the Silver Route, got a ton of great camping locations from those kml file thingies, and some other good recommendations. Thanks guys.

I think the plan will be to get fairly well south as soon as possible then, slow down and enjoy southern France the Pyrenees and Spain, and hopefully some warm weather.

Lonely Planet guidebooks mention campgrounds near the airport in both Seville and Barcelona, they are all closed!!!

For Seville go south to the town of Dos Hermanas and for Barcelona go south to the town of Sitges for the nearest campgrounds.

In France we highly recommend Motocamp at GPS: N 44º 44. 311 E 1º 16.540, not far from the caveman paintings of Lascaux.

here is my two cents...

last summer (june 25) i flew into barcellona. i was backpacking it. first night thought that i would see about a camp ground, and after they wanted nearly E30 for a night, i thought otherwise.

i was travelling with a hammock. found a couple of trees and strung it up. for the next four months of travelling around spain, i slept in me hammock. pretty much every night inside a city. anything from flag poles, bill boards, to chain link fences. never once was i bothered, never once was i asked to move on, zero problems from the police, zero problems from anyone. i was actually surprised how many other people where camping. pretty much every city i visited had the ruins of an old castle, usually on top of a hill near the center of town, with plenty of trees to string up a hammock. 99% of the beaches had showers, all with fresh water. i wasnt the only person washing their clothes and drying them with the mid day sun.

so if you really need to stay in a camp ground, fair enough. but personally, for spain, just find a good place, and camp for the night.
