Budgeting

Hi,
I am planning a one year trip around South America for as cheap as possible (food from grocery stores, camping wherever possible, etc.) and am trying to compare the costs for riding a klr versus flying via a round the world ticket. I've worked out a very basic budget for riding the klr, but need help making something a little more specific as I've never done this type of trip before. If you could help me identify things I'd be spending money on if I decide to ride the klr I'd really appreciate it.

thanks,
A.J.

To get to South America it is cheaper to fly.

Where are you starting from?
Where are you going to go?
Do you have a bike?
How long can you ride?
Is this trip a I went to SA for a year Im cool here is where I went or a I Want to know what SA is all about?
Can you fix a KLR?
Patch a tire?
This your first big ride?

Now for things you will spend $ on.
parts
chain and sprocket kits
tires
bags and rack
riding gear
kit (camping gear)
say 2 to 3k

gas
food
bribes, fees, fines, border crossings
Flying you and the bike over the Darien gap. 1 to 2k is a good bet. cheaper if you get a boat to take you.

say 7k depends on things like how fast you ride faster is more $ SA is cheap food and hotels

3k to 4k and you go to Antarctica unless the price went up.

Ideas to make it less $ a smaller bike you will not be running at 80 MPH, Ride slower saves gas food is cheap and capping can be free. talk to people they have food and a place to rest and it is free. look up the community on the HUBB http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/community/contactEnglish.shtml

working for it Help Exchange work for accommodation and food in Australia New Zealand Canada Europe not wwoof
You may not get best price for a grocery store and camping may not work as wll in some places you may be stuck "wild camping"

you may want to go a meeting http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/meetings/

Essay!!! :)!!

DLbiten...great answer!! ;)!!!

Hi, my name is Matteo, and i've just put down a rough idea of my route. starting fro Santiago(where i will buy either a KLR or a BMW GS650)

now the KLR is roughly 4000$ for an old one, BMW 6000$.

the KLR does 100Km with 5.5 litres, but you'll have extra weight ect... so lte say 100km/6.26 litres. that works out 1 litre = 16km.BMW more economical on fuel more expensive on parts
?c?

NOW....

Brasil is the most expensive country in south america, 4.89$ per gallon.

ill be traveling ARGENTINA BRAZIL BOLIVIA PERU ECUADOR COLOMBIA VENEZUELA and back to to CHILE for then sell my bike back in Argentina.
(that is the plan....let's see if i can do it!! :)!! )

now as we said, Brazil most expensive 4.89$/gallon Argentina is like 3.5x$/gallon and so. so lets average that to a south American global price of 4.5$ per gallon across SA
.?c?(and i hope i'm been very large on the avarage)

riding from santiago to cartagena in colombia is roughly 18 000 km.

santiago - rio de janeiro - brasilia - la paz - cuzco -manta- quito - bogota - cartagena.

18 000km.... 4.5$ per gallon or better 1.2$ per liter

18000km divided by 16Km/L = 1125Litre to complete the whole journey

1125Litre times 1.2$ per litre = 1350$ in fuel.... but that is not a good margin so lets time that by 2 and you get 2700$ fuel for your trip.i'd say 2500$.

bare in mind that the high you go(bolivia, chile peru, ) the more your bike will suck on petrol tank.....

another big expence is WATER!!!!
I THINK IS A must TO BUY...... some of those water purifier pens... if you add up the cost of buying bottled water every day or purifiy your own..... better invest 100$ on a steripen or on a miox....i prefer the steripen but only because the miox needs salt etc.....(google the names for more info).

gears allow 1000$ dollars...dont get fancy looking disign stuff......helmets are all the same....well not really but the all works very well once...then you gotta buy a new one...the extra costs is comfort.
300$on helmet 100$/150$waterproof boots,600$ between jacket, trousers and gloves.....the high you go doesnt metter the time of the year the colder it gets!!

what else....mmmmhhh???

I DON'T KNOW :)!! THIS ARE ONLY MY THOUGHT AND HONESTLY I NEVER DONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE......NEVER EVER...BUT I'VE BEING STUDING THIS TRIP NOW FOR SEVERAL MONTHS!!!

COMMENTS WILL BE GREATLY WELCOMED

CIAOOOO! ;)!!!

MATTEO!! :)!!?c??c??c??c?
