Budget required for Panamericana
Hi Folks,

Question :
Im planning to travel from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego starting June 2004.
Although there is still some time ahead, i have to start saving money now ;-)...
I am not sure what budget this trip requires (with all equipment already bought) when travelling for 6 Months (no working during this period).
Would be interested in your opinions !

I normally budget on £30 per day. Given that some countries are cheaper or more expensive than others this is an average. US and S.America are on the whole comparable with the EU for costs.

On £30 p/d you'll get by in comfort I'd say but see what others have to say.

Hi all,

I'm on my way down the Panamericana hanging around in Mexico at the moment. All I heard from other Travelers is, that Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua are the cheapest places on the track.

US and Canada were expensive like hell - but you should know that. Pay alot and you get nothing.

Mexico (nothern part) is also quite expensive. Its hard to stick on my planned budget of 25 US$ a day.

Ecuador just fixed their currency to the Dollar. That will not make prices better :-(

Bolivia is still cheap. Chile and Argentina expensive. The rest more or less like Mexico.

The americas is not like asia :-/

PS: remember, prices change a lot. I don't know, what you have to expect in 2004.

a 12 months panamericana trip = 365 * 30 $ = 10950 $

I think it's a to small budget per day

I would rather accept 50 $ / day - all including costs (food, fuel, tires, stay per night, ...)

What's your practical experience about the distribution between tent and pension-hotel
(weather or secure or sleep properly needs) nights on the panamerciana route and their costs ?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
