Brownsville to Belize

First timer planning a trip from Brownsville to Belize city. Two 60 year old farts, both experienced riders on HD Dressers. Looking for some good advice on places to see / stay, routes to take, or avoid, and anything important we should know about especially the suitability of the bikes. Leaving in the spring of 2006.

First, locate a copy of Dr. Gregory Frazier's "Riding South;Mexico, central America and South America by Motorcyle"(ISBN 0-935151-04-4).This will be a great starting point.I'm planning a 4 week,5,000 mile trip thru Mexico,Guatemala, and Belize.Plenty of folks have travelled south on Harleys.Parts and mechanics may be hard to find outside of Mexico City,so start off with a full pre-trip servicing. Also, the Mexico/Cental America Forum is usefull for region specific questions.

The biggest concern will probably be between Palenque and the Belize border.

Palenque is 20 miles or so off the road to Belize, but makes for a nice overnight spot.

Escarcega is a pit.

There's a very nice hotel/cabin place (was listed as a Ramada 6 or so years ago)on the north side of the hwy and just a few miles before entering Quintana Roo. Rooms were about $100.

I recommend planning to ride from Palenque to the border and Corozal Town in Belize.

How are your plans coming? I'm planning on riding from El Paso to Guatamala in early 2007 (a long wasy off). I'm starting to look at routes and recomendations.

Thanks
Ken

If you plan on coming through Mex City we will be happy to put you up and show you around. The city has some great things to see and the pyramids are really close by.

we are also 2 old farts of the same vintage....we are 2 days into Mexico from Brownsville on 2 Honda Shadows. When are you leaving....we travel slow....not mph slow.....distance slow I mean. Perhaps we will meet up.

Guys the same goes for you two, if you are in the Mexico City area we'd to happy to put you up and show you around. Don't be put of by the size or the horror stories.
