Bosnia vs. Croatia (not trying to start the next balkan war)

Hi,
as some of you might know I'm in Bulgaria right now. After that I'm off to Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro after which I have to decide if I'm heading for Croatia or Bosnia.

I'll have to be in Trieste (Italy) in early September so I might just end up taking the shortest route through Croatia, depending on how much time I spend in Albania and Montegnegro. On the other hand at least on the map Bosnia looks like more mountains, more twisties and less tourists (because of not having a coastline).

So, supposing that time is not much of an issue, what's more fun: Croatia or Bosnia?

First hand experience would be most welcome :)

Cheers

Hi Buebo,

It depends what your idea of fun is. As you say, Croatia has the coastline, and although very scenic, the roads are very full, especially with trucks, and there are long stretches of no overtaking areas. Head inland towards the mountains, and the roads are much quieter and generally in good condition.

I personally prefer Bosnia for the reasons you mention - few tourists, many mountain roads etc., but be careful on those roads - they are not so well maintained as those in Croatia and unexpected slides in corners become the norm. There are many gravel roads to explore - minefields are well-marked and you can be sure of a welcome wherever you go.

So to summarise, for pure riding pleasure, Croatia probably offer more, for the whole experience, Bosnia (These are of course my own personal opinions!).

Viel Spaß und viele Grüße!

Dave

I rode through Croatia and a bit of Bosnia last September. The Croatian coast road in particular was stunning - but busy. I also enjoyed the quieter (=empty) mountain roads in Montenegro. I think it's about page 7 on my blog, link below.Try and see Kotor, Dubrovnik, Split, Trogir.

I preferred Bosnia - probably because it was less touristy. Also, personally, I found the people more welcoming. If you do go, Sarajevo is a must - fantastic place.

Thank you all for your advice.

I think I'll go to Sarajevo and then just take the fastest route to Trieste, Italy. By now time starts to run out, have to be in Trieste on the 5th of September and planing to spend something like a week in Albania.

Cheers
