I couldn't tell when is the best time.I crossed 2 years ago mid afternoon going towards Copacabana. This crossing was out in the country-5 miles from Copacabana.Copacabana itself didn't seem to be a very big city.Taking the boats across the lake was cheap, quick, and interesting. Here are a few pics I took at the border. There was no ATM at the border and it cost $142 USD when I was there.I borrowed money from 5 riders from Brasil. I met them leaving Cusco 2 days before.

This is lake front Copacabana-where you load your bike. There was a long lineup of boats waiting to take cars, small trucks,or motorcycles across to Bolivia.I was there in early January and it wasn't busy. With all the boats sitting there, you have to think it gets busy sometime.

Crossing to Copacapana

Here is a crossing that happened just a few months ago.

It shouldn't cost you anything to cross over ...unless you are a US citizen and you have to buy a visa. Otherwise, visas are free and so is the vehicle.

I crossed with a car in December 2013 (with a car) and I arrived at mid day. The place was dead. Very quiet. I did the processing in 2 minutes - and then I had to open the gate myself to drive through. Clearly the guys were 'overworked'.

Lifted from a friends blog. They crossed from Copo to Peru.

"The rip off for us was the little lake crossing on the barge. Henning paid nothing and we paid £7. It was 100meters...

In the morning we went through the border. Customs wanted us to pay tax on the fuel we didn't buy in Bolivia....Sounds like Syria. We actually got it in Brazil. We slept in a fuel station and filled up without the hassle and bribes like Bolivia."

Seems like the cost depends on the mood etc of the official !!

They were in a 110, their friend on a bike.

Wow that sounds like you have been cheated. Cant remember how much the ferry was when i was there with the bike but it was only 1 or 2 Dollars otherwise i would remember and the boarder shown on the pictures was free, no tex etc. only took a while because many backpackers crossed there

Entering into Peru cost a little bribe because my bike was not on my name.

Edit: Ich checked my records: The ferry was 15 Bolivianos for me including the bike.

There was no visa charge for the riders from Brazil. The $142 it cost US citizens is reciprocal, because the US charges for Bolivians coming to the USA. I think I read last year that gas stations in Bolivia were supposed to be charging double the posted price for foreigners. I think people were crossing the border to buy cheap gas then returning home. When I left Oruro,I went to 4-5 stations before I found one with gas.

Thats true but with a little tip or if you walk in to the petrol stations with your canisters in your hands (as they dont have plates) you still get the local price :)

Not related to the thread but where are you now? Robert.

Bolivia

Hi Robert,
Crossing from Peru to Bolivia was a piece of cake. I got three months for me and the bike right off. So no messing around in La Paz. Riding 95% of the time solo has not been a problem. Rode two up with a Swiss girl and her huge backpack from Arequipa to Cochabamba. Had to divert for two hours through farm fields to circumvent a road block between La Paz and Cochabamba. Then another road block...got off the bike went up the strikers...smiled and explained in sign language and some Spanish that I was tired, had dropped my bike in the mud...they raised the barricade and let me ride through.
Sorry but I have not been on the forums for a couple of months. I am hanging in Sucre, Bolivia for maybe three months. Killing time until October. Then fly home for two weeks. Leave my bike in either BA or Santiago...return and head to Ushuaia in November.
Then catch the Dakar 2014 January 12 when the bikes and quads hit Salar de Uyuni. I have turned my 6 month trip into an 18 month one. Taking time to enjoy.
Not sure how I far I will ride north, may ship my bike to Europe or Africa...unless I find a sweet SA lady to settle down with. :)

Peru to Bolivia Crossing at Copacabana

Has anyone done this crossing recently and have any advice? We'll be doing it in two days time and wondering if there are any fees for import permits or photocopies needed etc.

Thanks!
