HI all . I am thinking of traveling overland by motorcycle from the UK to Australia one way leaving (selling) the bike and flying home. i like any information ie the best route to take what visa's i need and a ruff time scale for the trip and any pit falls i may encounter along the way. i have rode motorcycles all my life and now i feel that the time is right to set off on the adventure of my life. so all help and advice will be welcome. You'll need to have a carnet to get your UK bike into Oz, and selling it there, you would do against the agreement that got you the carnet, so you don't get the carnet bond back. Or then you make permanent import, but that'll probably cost big time as well. Selling there probably won't be feasible, I'm afraid.

Selling the bike in Australia
 

If you are going to sell the bike in Australia .. you will need to import it. And any buyer here will need to register it , and that means it will have to be approved in some way to the 'Australian Design Rules' or ADRs ... it won't be cheap! Lots of paper work. :(

One way around the ADRs is to have an old bike - one before the ADRs ... about 1975 IIRC? There may be an import thing where once the bike is past a certain age? 20 years? Don't know - look it up.

An alternative is to have the bike broken up into parts and sold for spares.... the engine will not be usable as a whole but must also be broken up for spares.. they do keep track of such things with the engine number. :funmeterno:

You can't sell your bike here in Oz without a lot of dollars and paperwork.
A couple of options.
If you do the trip on a used bike without a massive value (eg. not a BMW 1200GSA) then just sell for parts when you get here and cut your losses. It will still be cheaper than importing.
If your chosen bike is something big and expensive (eg. a BMW1200GSA) then it would probably still be cheaper to ship it from Australia back to the UK ($2000-2500) and sell it back home.

As for route, avoid China unless you have deep pockets.... at this stage you have to ship your bike around Burma as well.

Thanks for the information . the bike is old but up for the trip ! I think i would be able to give it to motorcycle shop to be resold or broken for parts without any problems as the bike dosn't owe me loads of money. i was planning to go through china but all information i am getting says to avoid like the plague. thanks again. regards roy t

We did 5 days thru western china this year with a group of motos put together on the hubb. the cost was not prohibitive (but choose the guide company carefully) & we had the amazing experience of coming down the KKH thru Hunza Valley. The cost without a group is much higher.
