Best laid plans etc
Hi all
This has probably happened to a lot of people and I'm interested to see if it is common, I started my travelling in July 06 and spent the last 7 months riding around S.E.Asia, have been through Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Lao. I was planning on shipping the bike to Turkey and spending a while in Europe seeing the sights but things seem to have added up and I now find myself back in Australia and taking the long way back from Darwin to Brisbane. No real idea why I changed my mind about going to Europe, think it's a combination of things. Partially homesick and will be good to get back to Brisbane and see my son and mates, maybe I'm getting tired of living out of a tin box on the back of a bike :-), sometimes I think a van would be a lot better travelling vehicle than a bike, at least you could sleep in it. Anyway, enough babbling from me, I'll be looking in the Aus threads for the best ways to head from Darwin to Brisbane via Ularu and Adelaide for a while and probably looking at the Aus to Europe shipping pages in a few months.

Yes biking can be tiring. Maybe if you stopped more often? Probably if you had a van you'd want to be back on the bike!

I think this is a really interesting topic and 2 things occur to me.

However relaxed you are about life and all that it throws at you, the stress of having to find a new place to sleep every single night can be mentally very tiring so that after an extended period of travelling by bike, it is very easy to be extremely worn down. A long term tiredness (not just knackered after a night out on the lash) can be very debilitating and sap you of the drive needed for RTWing.

And secondly I know everybody is different, but perhaps after spending a long time riding round just looking at stuff, perhaps you need a break. If there is a purpose, or a destination, or something else then that helps. It may be sacrilegious to say that here, but that was my experience towards the end of a year long trip

This is very true! Driving a camper van I wish I was the biker who just went past me... as night approaches I love being in the camper van.

If you're anything like me, stick with the bike or you'll regret it. A comfortable place to sleeps is no replacement for the wind in your face.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
