Beijing to Ulan Batar?

Hi all,

I'll be in Beijing and Dalian, China next summer for two weeks for school. I'm wanting to extend it a week, procure a motorcycle of some sort, and ride into Mongolia. The plane ticket leaving from UB is surprisingly not that much more expensive than the round trip to Beijing if done on the right days.

Question(s):
Is 7 days feasible? I wanted to try Irkutsk at first, but I'm pretty sure that's not possible

How hard is it to obtain a bike in China? I'm looking for something cheap but reliable. Cheap meaning $1000 or less, I hope.

Thanks for any advice!

-Charlie

C'est possible

7 days is possible ... assuming you have all paperwork sorted before you set off from Beijing ... including an Alien Restricted Area Permit from the PSB for transiting the Inner Mongolia border region. Bear in mind it takes 3 full days to ride from Erlian (Erinhot) on the border to UB.

The border is closed on weekends, or was when I was there. And expect delays at that border. Erlian - Dzaamin Uud is the only Mongol borderpost with China that "foreigners" are permitted to cross at.

Technically you need a Chinese Drivers Licence and a Chinese registered bike to ride in China ... The latter of the two is by far the most important but the easiest to solve. The former will be a challenge for you.

For more info see website in my sigline.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
