Beach Bum for 3-6 months
Hi there,
Me and the wife are only just starting our trip, but one thing we have planned to do for a while is to stop someplace, and just hang out, reading books, sipping drinks, chilling, for perhaps 3 -6 months. And having had our first beach side experience of the trip it has got us thinking where we might do this. Our requirements are: 1. It has to be cheap, as we want to live on next to nothing if possible. 2. We are thinking of getting a beach hut or some cheap accomadation, so we aren't living out of the landie, although that isn't 100% requirement. 3. We would like to be by the beach, with nice clean water, with perhaps some snorkelling nearby. 4. Although we aren't looking for sophiostication, it would be nice to have a simple restaraunt withing walking distance to eat nice fresh local food. 5. Did I mention cheap? So, with those considerations we are thinking either India or Indonesia, but haven't drilled it down any more. I suppose Thailaind might work, but i have no idea how cheap it is. So, we are looking for some suggestions. Our route where we can do this is: India -> Thailand -> Laos -> Cambodia -> Malaysia -> Singapore -> Indonesia but we could always divert a little for something special. So, anyone got any ideas? Nice to hear it's all good mate, really envious as we are 3 months from departure doing the visa thing at the mo, anyway we were thinking the same thing and decided that south west India was the way forward and fits our criteria and yours by the sound of it, Good Luck

In India I would recommend the north coast of Kerala around Calicut. Not too many tourists about, empty palm fringed beaches, friendly locals and not so many hassles from touts. And like anywhere in India, if you get off the tourist trail incredibly cheap. Don't think there's any snorkling there though.

If you're driving south in India, consider the Konkan coast. It's much less touristy (in Maharashtra) with lots of jungle and beaches. Not much English is spoken in the villages either so you can immerse yourself in the local culture.
  I found some of the beaches in Goa horrible due to the uncontrolled development along the beach fronts so I wouldn't them recommend it for getting away from crowds, although Panjim is a nice town. Why not work your way down with a month or two in each area? Konkan - Goa (the nicer bits) - Kerala Stephan

best beaches
Hi ollie+jenny,
So the best beaches for us are in Malaysia you can pull up to almost any beach and bush camp, or on the east coast in the grounds of camp sites for nearly nothing, beautiful deserted beaches and clear water with a trip to the perhentian islands is a must. and every where is TESCO and Giant supermarkets so always stocked up on good food happy travels Rose+david check out our GPS POINTS for MALAYSIA P.S we ship to south America next month yipee!!!!!!!! Clifton in the Summer is great.
Water just feels cold when you first get in, after that, its great fun being bowled over by the big waves and thrashed along the bottom getting 'sand grazes' ! Now Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, Kalk Bay, is a whole different kettle of fish, with that beautiful warm Indian ocean, Oh I need some warm water !!
