We tried it a few weeks ago and turned back at a bad stretch of deep mud and ruts. We were on our own in a Land Rover Defender.

I think a bike would have got through OK.

If the weather has dried up the mud since we were there, it may now be drivable. There had been a lot of rain and snow prior to our attempt.

See my blog post with pics - A Gentle Introduction – then BAM! | Bermuda Rover

This ride report of mine at Mongolia to Magadan: Any which (the hard) way - ADVrider from 2013 gives you an idea of what to expect.

Light skinny bike with GOOD suspension = doable

Fat, heavy bike with normal suspension= very hard

wide bike = eg. with bmw boxer motor, as well as being heavy and fat = close to impossible

car = impossible

Good luck and enjoy!

The Northern Asia section of the HUBB gets much more people looking at it than Route Planning.

Hi Edd,

I will drive the western BAM together with a German Rider, both on KTM 640 ADV. We should meet around 15 of july in Ulan Bator, then drive to Irkutsk and from there start the BAM.
When will you be there?

I guess we will be around 20 of july at the start of the western BAM. Then we are heading to Magadan.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
