Baja

I am planning a trip from Tijuana to San Lucas. Any feedback on recommended stops or places to avoid would be appreciated.

We're planning a trip thru Baja also this winter, If you don't have it already Clement Salvadori's book "Motorcycle Journeys Through
Baja" is a good resource. A friend used it last year travelling thru Bahja and found it very useful. I purchased mine thru Whitehorse Press who is also the publisher, you could check with the Horizon's Unlimited links as well. Ride safe.

Chuck,

Thanks for the tip. I'll look for Salvadorie's book. I'd love to hear about your trip when you get back. When are you going?

No places are really to avoid in Baja. Basically there is just one paved road south, from where unpaved (and some paved) roads branch off.
I went from San Luis Rio Colorado south through San Felipe and then joined the main road until Los Cabos.
Places I would recommend:
- Baia San Luis Gonzaga (that's on an unpaved stretch south of San Felipe)
- Baia Concepcion (anywhere)
- La Paz
Later, if you are heading for the mainland from Baja, there are two ferry routes from La Paz, one to Los Mochis (7 hours) and one to Mazatlan (15 hours I think). I took the Los Mochis route and saved about 500 pesos. The boat is modern and smooth.
For Baja you don't need the vehicle permit that you can get at the border, but if you take the ferry, you need it. It's a lot less hassle to get it at the border in advance. It'll cost about 240 pesos for a 6 months and you leave your credit card number for deposit. You cancel it when you leave Mexico.
Baja is beautiful. Enjoy it.

Crossed Baja via the main highway last month, and happy to relay any info. I found staying in Ensenada a good introduction to the country (or at least Baja), with mentionable places including El Rosario (check out Mama Espinoza's), the highway around Catavina, San Ignacio (nice, friendly B&B there called Ignacio Springs), Santa Rosalia, Todos Santos and San Jose del Cabo. You get get some m/c stuff in La Paz, but all in all I would recommend taking everything you expect to need along with you.

Have Fun!

Sorry, I haven't had time to check the posts til now, Moving and getting ready to head to Baja. We will be leaving Pheonix, where our bike is being trucked to on January 19th and we need to be back in Pheonix on February 15th to load the bike for transportation back to Canada. We will be riding a blue and white F650 dakar with Alberta plates, hope to see you down there.
