Arround Mediterranean ?

Hi Everyone from new member from Croatia!

Im planing to go on a trip sound mediterranean, in July 06. This is tle route :

Zagreb-Trieste-Azure coast-Barcelona-Madrid-Lisboa.

Then Rabat-Marakech-Algeria-Tunisia-(boat)Sardegna-Corse.

(boat)Italy-Roma-Napoli-Bari-Dubrovnik.

Please advise about safety, african part of the route, sleeping in tents etc. A collegue of mine from Cro said I should ditch Algeria and Tunisia and stay in Morocco?

Thanx
Alex

Welcome to the HUBB!

I'm afraid the Maroc/Algeria border has been closed for about 10 years and in Algeria guides seem to be compulsory.

Sorry to spoil your plan.

laki_topalovic 5 Jan 2006 20:56

already found out about it :-) doesnt matter. Ill go back to Spain, then by boat to Tunisia, and onwards as planned (Sardegna, Italy....)

thx anyway.

Laki, do you know what the law is regarding
the importation of bikes to Croatia? I'm
planning on a trip from USA through Europe
to Croatia this summer.
thanx

Zinger:

If you just plan to drive into Croatia and then drive out again later (meaning, you are just visiting as a tourist, not importing the motorcycle for the purpose of selling it in Croatia or putting a Croatian licence plate on it), then the process is simpler than visiting Canada.

You just show up at the border, they look at you, sometimes ask for a passport, sometimes not, and then wave you through.

I have visited Croatia on my Canadian registered motorcycle every year for the past 4 years - the longest time I was ever stopped at the border crossing was about 90 seconds.

Hi Michael. Actually, I'll be traveling under Croatian passport, I did not plan on selling the bike in Croatia, but I figured I'll get some flak about importation anyway because of citizenship status. If possible I'd like to keep it under my US license plates. I'm planning the trip for this june or july so I'm just getting a head start here while I got time.
Do you have any tips you'd like to share on shipping? I talked to couple agents recommended on this site, and motorcycle express is coming up rather positive so far.
thanks for reply

ADITIONAL IDEAS about the trip

In the past few days I have started to spread the word about it arround my town and some interest has come up..... sponsorships, TV etc etc. IF all goes well, I would make this ride a fundraiser. Now, what I would like to know is WHAT exactly am I offering to the companies that may be willing to sponsor me?

-media coverage (t-shirts, logos etc. during potential interviews
-photos of their products durin the ride (for ex. drinking some bottled water in a photo in I dont kno, Morocco for ex, or on the edge of the desert)

pls. I need more ideas, how to make this a good project, because Id like to raise some money for the kids and babies here in Zagreb, in one hospital

thanx all

Zinger,

Im sorry for not replying earlier but I didnt see this thread and missed your Q. I suppose youre Croatian then or...? :-) OK, ill write in English nevertheless. No importation needed while driving through Cro BUT you may have some problems as I see it...

You have a US registered vehicle, AND Croatian passport and/or drivers licence. If you get stopped by cops here and you have US licence, US plates - no problem. If you dont, then they MAY give you some issues about this.

"Croatian citizens, w. Croatian passport may drive vehicles registered abroad ONLY if they have valid work permit (green card I suppose) in their passport. In any other case it will be considered as customs offence". Meaning, if I ride your bike, w. cro passport, without work permit somewhere outside cro then it may be zaplijenjen :-)) I dont know the english word for it

hope this helps

p.s. MAKE SURE you contact me when you come here :-) if im not in Africa at that time.

:-) If you want, contact me and I can give you email of an American guy who travel through Croatia last summer.

Laki, you should join the Zagreb HU Community - go to the Community section on the left, then "Join" - and travellers can then easily contact you and the other members of the Zagreb Community. And you can meet the other HU Community members in Zagreg too!

NOTE: This goes for anyone interested in meeting travellers in their town - check out the Communities now! Link on left...

Grant, If you mean on me too, I am the member of Rijeka HU Community (actually I'm first who opened community in Croatia) but people sometimes go around community :-)

Grant Johnson 11 Jan 2006 02:21

Nikola, I know - and thanks for your support! Eventually people will get used to using the Communities - we just have to keep reminding them! http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've posted my questions in English so anybody else looking for same advice as me would benefit from answers here.
Laki, I do hold Cro. citizenship, but have green card in USA with all other paperwork. I hope that will be enough.
I didn't know HU had communities in Rijeka and Zagreb.
Stay safe
