April in Scandinavia?

I am planning an around Europe trip for 6 months, and i was thinking of heading North to Scandinavia first. is it possible at that time of year?? all the way to Nordkapp?

Not recommended but possible.:oops2:

It's to slippery and cold climate that time of the year.
Try it to do other way round and go north in end of August it's best and warmest time even there is lot of moskies and tourists.

Capo is right to say April is to early, I have travelled Norway a fair bit at various times of the year, I would say the nicest and the most dramatic time I have been on a bike was in Mid May. The melt water and therefore the waterfalls were fantastic, you still had huge snow on the high ground and not so many tourists. It was really quite cold on some days in places some of the time and warm some days. Remeber that to cover the distances you need a many days or very long days in the saddle. I camped every night without problems. Some of the really high passes were shut due to snow so if you really want to travel up there you need to go later. Personally I think if you go as far north as Lofoton its brilliant but after that it can be a bit long winded in parts of the journey but its great once you get right up north a sense of place maybe. However if your going that far north try to also go over to kirkness or even to Murmansk, I would suggest coming back across to Norway down through Finland and Sweden before cutting back over at the Arctic circle into Norway. If you consider the coast road - it can be pleasant in places but is quite hard work and very long ride bye the way.

Thanks so much guys! Guess i'll be heading south to the Balkan States first and head up that way later in the year. Thanks for clearing that up!

In the southern part of Finland, people usually start riding around April 1st-April 15th. But depending on the year, it can still be quite cold, and below freezing in the nighttime. In Lapland, riding season normally starts about 1 month later (and ends about 1 month sooner).

But this winter has been especially cold, and I dont even remember, when was the last time we´ve had this much snow in Helsinki (about 70 cms right now!)... so unless it becomes wery warm in the spring, this is going to take some time to melt. And even if the roads will naturally be free of snow much earlier, the waters from the melting snow will keep them wet for a long time (meaning there´s high possibility of ice after daylight hours). So this year our riding season may start late. I would not plan to ride to North Cape in early April. Late April maybe, but that remains to be seen...
