Alaska - Vladivostok - Mongolia - Magadan

I would like to ride to Alaska (from western Canada) fly or ferry accross to Russia, train (or ride) to Mongolia, and back through the road of bones to Magadan before heading back.

It sounds un do-able, and probably is, but if anyone has any advice of where to go and where not to go that would be great. I dont mind heavy off roading, just river crossings may be a problem.

The road of bones would be great, but I dont think it is doable?

Thoughts, Suggestions?

Thanks

It's definitely doable. If you ship the bike to Vladivostok, ride from there across the so called Zilow Gap to Ulan Ude, south into Mongolia as far as you wish to go, then back to Russia and the Road of Bones you would have a marvelous adventure. There aren't any water crossings between Vladivostok and Ulan Ude but there certainly are river crossings on the ROB, so it's best to do that section in late summer when water levels are lower. There are far less biting insects in Siberia the last half of August, but the nights are getting chilly by then, a welcome trade off, IMHO. Knowing some Russian language is a big asset as you will encounter few people who speak English. I found The Russian people to be very friendly and they try their best to help a traveler.

I rode the section from Vlad to Ulan Ude last summer and there is a daily trip journal of this section, as well as the rest of Russia, on my website, www.rtwrider.net. It's not a difficult ride for the most part. I have never ridden the ROB, but a fellow named Adrian Scott did it last summer and a description is on his website, http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/AdrianScott/ (someone may have already posted this; if so, sorry to duplicate). There is also a good description on the Long Way Round video by Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman.

Go for it! You'll have a great great adventure.
