Africa, West Coast

We are Australians travelling for 2 1/2 years on an R80g/s and would like information on travelling to Africa. We hope to start on the West Coast and have heard we can ship out of Togo to Namibia or South Africa. If any one has done this or knows of another way south we would be interested to hear. Also if any one has travelled through Ethiopia and Eritrea and caught the ferry up to Egypt.

Abidjan (Ivory-coast), Togo and Kameroen are the best places to ship from. In these countries it is easy to meet other travellers who want to ship as well. I shiped in 1997 from Abidjan to Durban my bike in a container with 2 cars + 2 other bikes. So we shared all the costs between 5.
Note: harbourtax in Durban is 2% of value of vehicle in Carnet.

Going north from Ethiopia: consider the Djibouty-Jemen-Oman-Iran route going north instead of going to Egypt by boat.

I travelled up through Ethiopia & Eritrea and took the ferry to Jedda in Saudi. I seem to remember it cost about $100 for me and the bike but I might be wrong. It goes once a week and takes three days. The border is closed at the moment but the war is over so it should re open soon.
Coming down west you can get through via Cameroon, CAR and Zaire but it is a bit dodgy.
If you go to Cameroon I have a great friend who has a garage and a Super Tenere and knows all the bikers there in Yaounde.
Good luck

Hi,

Eritrea to Saudi was around us$200 (1 person plus bike) in `97 . Guess that has gone up a bit now.
Other option is to go from Ethiopia to Sudan (gedaref) and take the Aswan ferry to Egypt, which is floating again.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
