Advise on crossing Lao - Chinese - Russian borders needed
 

Dear All,

I am planning to travel from singapore to London. Most border crossings seem pretty much straight forward, but these have me wondering:

Laos - China - Russia

Now, is it possibe to travel through China on a motorbike via this route or is it unrealistic? Does anyone have any advice/tips or could point me to some links, please?

Hey are you ready to pass when I'm passing?
Then we could split the cost for the following viacle my girlfriend will drive, if I can afford it!
Im passing in December and I'm going in to Japan but maybe you could stay in Japan until spring:rolleyes2: or be a hard core winter :mchappy:

Crossing Lao
 

Hi Crossing Lao should be no problem, I have crossed and recrossed several times on my Cambodian registered bike. I crossed in from Cambodia at thye n orthern bordfer about 30 km north of Stung Treng. They were building a bridge last time I was there which should mean no ferry crossing is required. Be sure to visit Ankor Wat if travelling through Cambodia. Phnom Penh has a few good bike shops for repairs servicing. Check out Hoterl Californis for links to info and shops. One guy managed to "slip" from Laos into China earlier this year, you can read his remarkable trip reports at www gt-rider.com forums.. there is just one big BUT: he had a chinese-plated bike when he pulled that off. With any other plates it might be a whole different story, I wouldnt count on making it.

If you plan to do China the "official" way, you will, in short, need months of preparation, good contacts and loads of money, and you will be accompanied by a guide. And thats just getting into the country, crossing its entire length might be yet another thing. It doesnt seem to be totally impossible, however, but there are much easier (and probably a lot cheaper!) places to go to.

Some have reported crossing into China "unofficially", with foreign bikes, from Kazakhstan, but thats no guarantee it´ll work from Laos.

I am planning to go in April-May.

Nope I never tried, in theory its not possible. Independent travel by motorcycle is not possible in China you must be escorted with a guide at a cost of 100usd per day!. However people have crossed China without a guide see www.slowbikes.com/Home I believe Jake made it to the HUBB meeting in Chiang Mai, if your reading this Jake please aknowledge....The wet season in Cambodia and Lao is late summer and can make travelling almost impossible!!!. I am planning the reverse and entering China using Jakes route..maybe lol. Have fun!!
