Addis to Capetown - All Eastafrica

Hi there,

we plan to ride from Addis down to Capetown, visiting Kenya, Uganda, Ruanda, Tanzania, Malawi, and perhaps Namibia or perhaps Mozambique from Septembre to Decembre. If anyone got special hints, places to see (or to stay), we would to love to hear.

If someone is on the road out there, perhaps we can meet...

Regards
Eva and Thomas

Hi Eva & Thomas,

Sounds like a great ride. If you don't mind me asking, are you starting in Addis to avoid Egypt and Sudan and their associated hassles? There typically aren't many people flying into Addis, but some certainly have done it. We met a couple of Austrian guys that shipped in and out, not much hassle but a bit expensive for shipping.

As for places, there are a great many, and every country is different. In general though, a fairly standard overland route exists but it gets busier and more well travelled the more south you go. Make sure to explore as much of Ethiopia as you can. The Omo valley is a great destination, and f you are up for some additoinal adventure, the Lake Turkhana route into Kenya is a classic, but can be tough going. Have a great trip.

You guys are going to have a great time! But why miss out on Sudan and Egypt? Sudan is an incredible country to travel through with amazing people. Especially the northern section from Wadi Halfa to Dongola. Kenya is great, don't miss Uganda under any circumstances! Awesome contry!
All the best,
Bruce

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
