I'm still on course for my planned rtw trip in May 2014 - putting everything in order: workwise I have a year off with a job held open for my return, assuming I don't take longer - Which might happen!
Finances coming together. Still thinking about the bike to do it on, but choices being narrowed. As for the proposed route, my thinking is
Into France, Germany :down through Italy:
Cross to Greece, Turkey :
around or across the Black Sea into Russia:
Cross Kazakhstan to the Karakoram Highway:
Pakistan, India, Nepal:
Not sure of the situation with Myanmar - if not possible - fly to Bangkok:
Visit my brother in Cambodia:
Back into Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia:
Australia: east coast to visit a friend in Melbourne
New Zealand south and north Island:
Cross the Pacific to west coast USA: cross to the east coast - route yet to be decided. get back to blighty from there
All a bit vague I know, but anyone see any massive issues with that proposed route? ?c?
Let it be so!
We're about 18 months ahead of you in terms of our year on the road.
My sister and i are leaving in just over a month's time to drive UK - Nordkapp - Cape town - UK.
If you're anything like us, your plan/finer details of the route, will get tweaked and changed a fair few times over the coming months.
The bottom line is, you've decided you're doing it & you've sorted the time off work.
Along with getting the cash to do it, they're the two main stumbling blocks to a decent length trip as i see it.
The rest (including whether or not you go back to you old job) will take care of it's self.
I'm flying to ldn, from Sydney in march 2013 and riding to Georgia (from turkey) out to Kazakh border then up to st Pete then back to London , il give u a yell this time next year to let u know how that part went,
And I live in wollongong mate, look it up. Hour south of Sydney, and beautiful beaches. Stop in for a beer on the way to Melbourne.
I am doing a very similar route leaving Ireland/UK in April 2014 to Nepal (due to get to Nepal in October/November 2014). Except I was planning on going through Iran instead of Pakistan but I want to do the KKH so perhaps your route makes more sense.
If this coincides with any of your timings - especially the route through Pakistan - shoot me a PM and we can keep in contact.
I also live in Melbourne so if I am back there by the time you get here, let's have a beer!
Notes on your route: Just make sure you aren't passing through Turkey-to-Pakistan area in July/August. Monsoons and heatstroke aren't ideal. Not 100% sure of my months there - just have a quick Google of the climate in those areas.
What motorcycle are you riding?
Thanks Nicola.. Yeah saw your other posts... sounds like a similar idea.
Still lots of stuff to put in place, but the funds are coming together, time off work agreed all systems go.
I'll be looking for a bike in the new year. planning on a 2nd hand xt660 tenere
been reading Graham Fields book about his trip to Mongolia lately a no frills honest write up that I have found entertaining, informative and inspiring..
well worth a read :)
Time for a quick update..
Plans still on course.. Money is coming together, trying not to spend it is the difficult bit when there seems to be so much stuff I need to gather together!
I have bought a bike - A Kawasaki Versys.. after much searching I decided a large part of the trip will be road biased with a bit of offroad in the middle and some dirt track type stuff, so I wanted to open up the possibilites a bit.
Plus the cost of a carnet being influenced by the value of the vehicle had to be considered.
I picked up this for the right money ... and am more than happy to prepare it as I see fit for the journey..
Here it is as it stands right now.
I have a lot of plans to turn it into the "adversys" it needs to be.. but that will come with time.
list of things off the top of my head
bash plate (custom made)
re-upholstered seat - to increase the seat height
reworked front forks
I have seen mod for fitting a resprung R1 rear shock.
dual sport tyres
Replace all wheel bearings, brakes hoses etc etc..
probably some other stuff that I cant think of right now
I've modified plenty of bies before so not concerned about my own ability to sort it out.
Keep on moving towards the departure date!
“Cross Kazakhstan to the Karakoram Highway:
Pakistan, India, Nepal”
To reach the Karakoram Highway from the north, you have to get into China with your motorcycle, and there are no feasible options there (except go through Iran to Pakistan, though this route is not without difficulties either, visa for Iran being one possible stumbling block).
“Not sure of the situation with Myanmar - if not possible - fly to Bangkok”
Some changes are finally starting to emerge just now in Myanmar, but personally I would not hold my breath, that its borders will be open for tourists with their own vehicles already next year. Remember, it´s been closed for many decades, and they still have big issues to solve, before we can realistically expect that to happen.
@Nicola_a see my thread here there's a few more potential travellers to meet up with for that section
Barkbuster type handguards
Get the best handguards out there! TUSK Tusk D-Flex Handguards | Dirt Bike | Rocky Mountain ATV/MC
I run them on all of my Moto Adventure fleet in Peru. They have saved many a broken lever and more importantly MANY A HAND! It is much harder for a donkey cart or semi truck to catch your handle bar and cause you great grief!
Are you coming to Peru? Even tho I am from the USA, Peru is where I live and my back yard. I can help you with anything. :mchappy::mchappy::mchappy:
