Thumbs up Volunteer/do good as you go while you travel

Hey all -- so interesting reading everyone's stories!

A few months ago, I returned from a 14 month journey across North and Central America on motorcycle. Absolutely the BEST year of my life and I can't wait to do it again. One of my goals was to volunteer along the way, but I found it difficult to find opportunities while I was on the road. I discovered tghe answer though!! I found Dogoodasyougo.org (Muskoka Foundation) at the Overland Expo 2012 and they lined up the opportunities for me while I was en route.

I worked in boys and girls orphanages in central and south Mexico, along with some opportunities in the states and came home with a whole new perspective of the world as a 'community' and how as individuals we CAN make a difference. Incredible and every bit helps.

There are opportunities with First Nations in the US and Canada, African or Asian communities, Mexico and Central America and beyond.

If you are currently traveling or planning a trip and have thought about volunteering but aren't sure how to get the ball rolling -- get in touch with dogoodasyougo.org. They can line you up with opportunities (for FREE!!) which will make your journey that much more special and rewarding.

I can speak from experience as an Overland traveler -- it was so easy, all I did was show up and give my gift of time You can read about some of my experiences at OverlandNow - Dual-Sport Travel Blog

Happy traveling!

Thanks for the tip!

I am currently out of the U.S. but am planning when I get back on a North America trip. During the trip, I would like to take the time to volunteer as you did. I will check out Do Good As You Go | Do Good As You Go - The Muskoka Foundation and see what is all about. It's nice to hear about good travel experiences. Thank you.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
