I ride a BMW F650. Where to go for maintenance or repair with your BMW or other foreign motorbike in India? Forget Deutsche Motoren in Faridabad and Navnit Motors in Mumbai and Bangalore. A complete waste of time: no spare parts, no tools, no competence, no service. In stead go to authorized Royal Enfield dealers: well equiped, competent mechanics and excellent service. Listed below the workshops I have visited and had good experience. *

Kay Tee Automobiles, authorized Royal Enfield dealer in Delhi near the airport. Coordinates: N 28 32 776 E 077 07 545. They mounted the tyres I had ordered myself, repaired the exhaust and cleaned the carburator. Good service. Thank you Kay Tee Automobiles. *

S.K.Y.S. Automobiles, authorized Royal Enfield dealer in Aurangabad. Tel.: 0240-2350652, 0240-2340352. SKYS replaced the steering bearings which were damaged on the rotten roads of India. As Kay Tee: competent, good service, friendly and helpful. Thank you too. *

Rajasthan Auto Centre, Sanjay Bazar, Jaipur. Coordinates: N 26 54 954 E 075 49 520. An okay workshop for simple maintenance and minor repair. Helpful and friendly. Thank you too. *

Krishnan ("Hari") Narayani of Yesgeor Motors, Chamaraja Double Road, Mysore. Tel.: 0821-2330070. Coordinates: N 12 18 142 E 076 38 696. Hari was recommended on the HUBB by Vincent Dana in 2004. Hari replaced chain and sprockets in the way it should be done: not by opening the chain but by taking off the wheelbridge. Good guy, competent, helpful and friendly. And for Hari: thank you, if I need a mechanic in the southern part of India I will come to you again.

Did you need to replace any tyres in/around India? If so, where/who supplied them?

Yes, I replaced tyres in India. I ordered them from my home country, The Netherlands. Forget Deutsche Motoren in Faridabad, forget Navnit Motors in Mumbai and Bangalore. A complete waste of time: no spare parts, no tools, no competence, no service. Below you find my frustating experiences with Navnit Motors.

*As I was heading for Mumbai I emailed Navnit Motors there: "Do you have tyres in seize such and so available and if not how long will it take you to order those tyres?" I got an email back confirming my question and the message that it was handed over to the tyre department. After that I got no emails from Navnit for a week so I send again a mail. I got a reply: "What type of tyres do you need?" Well, that is a good question although I can imagine a message like "We have the tyres in the seize you requested for street use, for off road, etc." or "We don't have tyres in the seize you requested but we can order them for you". Something like that. I emailed "I want street tyres". Nothing happened. I waited another week and send again an email. I got an answer "Can you send us some pictures of the tyres you use now? That makes it easier for us." I understood I was hooked up. About two weeks later I got an email from Navnit Mumbai with three pictures of tyres they had in stock. One was of a very different seize, the other two were incompatible.

A couple of months later I had to replace chain and sprockets. I have a spare chain and sprockets, I could do it myself but replacing is a bit of a hassle as it is a endless/closed chain and therefore the wheelbridge has to be taken off. Well, in Bangalore is another branch of Navnit so why don't give them a second chance? I called them. The receptionist said I would be called back. To my surprise, within half an hour the chief mechanic called back. He said it was no problem. I asked to do the job the same day in the afternoon. He responded "No problem, see you in the afternoon". Navnit is located at the outskirts of town about ten kilometres from the city centre and has an airconditioned lobby with leather chairs. After a short while the chief mechanic came: "Sorry, we don't have the tools to open the chain, those are in Mumbai at the moment. Can you come back monday?" It was Thursday. I responded "Firstly, you could have called me as soon as you discovered you had no tools and spared me a ride. Secondly, you don't need tools to open the chain. According to BMW procedures you need to take off the wheelbridge." He didn't know or he didn't want, he just repeated "Come back on monday". This company which sells the most expensive bikes in India doesn't have the tools to open a chain, value 20 usd! Thank you very much, Navnit Motors.

Not happy with the BMW dealers in India also, I did find Joe's Garage in Bangalore " Google it " he has guys that have been working for him 12 + years and he himself has an impressive collection of racing awards ...
The local guys with big bikes all know him, and he does his best to keep a stock of tires, sprockets , chains , filters, even riding gear .. etc for the big bikes.. I got new tires for a F800 GS BMW, filter, made the front wheel round again and recovered the seat .. etc.. his buddies have big BMWs as well as KTMs, Honda, and Yamaha ..

Thanks for the info. I'm scrounging for some front brake pads for my 1150GSA. Headed from Kathmandu to Kolkata. Any suggestions? Can I ship them?

You must be able to find those brakepads in Kathmandu. I have recommended a mechanic in Kathmandu. He might get them for you. I am quite sure you find brakepads in Kolkata as well. Sorry for the late response. I had no internet available. Safe travels, Mart.

Thank you very much for your response. We didn't find them in Kathmandu as it's a rare size and my bike is very rare in places like that. Kolkata should have them.
