bent rim in Kampala
 

I am on a slow cruise to Cape Town ona DR650SE. Alas a rock has dented one of the outer flanges on my rear wheel. It isn't too bad but there is a convergence of opinion by the local mechanics. Some say beat it back cold while others say it must be heated.
Any ideas wheteher it should be hot or cold and who might be best able to do this in Kampala?

You don't want to mess with the heat treating.

If it bent cold, you can bend it back cold.

A wood block roughly carved in the shape of a good piece of the rim will do a good job - with the aid of a large sledge hammer. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

Grant is right,beat it back if you can.If the dent is outwards you can get away without even taking the tyre off,just let the air out.I've straightened many a bent rim over the years and never had a crack.
