Motos del Peru in Lima - recommended!

Motos del Peru is a great shop in the Surquillo area of Lima. We stayed at Backpackers-Hitchhikers Hostel in Miraflores, and the MDP is only about 5-7 minutes away by moto. They are a Suzuki dealer, but they did not hesitate to help us with our BMWs.

Felipe Miranda is one of the owners, and he was of great help to me rounding up spares and a tire, and he let me use one of the service bays for an entire day to change oil and do maintenance on both our F650s. Gonzalo is the lead mechanic, with 26 years experience, and he was able to wet-sand one of my wife's fork tubes where rocks had pitted it long ago under PO, and corrosion had started. So far the new seal is holding, fingers crossed.

I highly recommend you contact Felipe for service or parts, I did so in advance and he had things all arranged when we arrived in Lima. Felipe responded to an inquiry I sent out to the Lima HU community.

Contacted MDP via email regarding skins for Ktm 950, response was quick. Visited shop and had rubber within the hour. Service was great and they had lots of bikes to browse. Thanks MDP,

I have to disagree with the recommendation of Motos Del Perú, at least the Suzuki shop. I went to the main shop for Yamaha, but nobody there even mentioned the new Suzuki shop and showroom that is a short distance away. I then went to Moto Box who sent me to the Suzuki branch of Motos Del Perú. It's on the same street, Republica de Panama, less than a kilometer away.
I needed a front tire, a chain, the front countershaft sprocket and the rear wheel sprocket. It took several days in a city of 10 million to locate a set of sprockets(14/43 not the stock 15/47 that I wanted), an o-ring chain, and a tire. I was told to come in the next day and all would be ready.
When I arrived the next day at noon, I was told that the rear wheel sprocket had arrived, but was aluminum, not steel and I would have to come back tomorrow. Why couldn't they have called me to prevent a wasted round trip taxi ride you ask? Good question!

The saga continued the next day when I arrive to get my bike. I get good news that my front sprocket is the stock 15, but the back one is a 43, not the stock 47. This turns out to be acceptable at highway speeds, but means putting excess strain on the clutch by slipping it more to start out. So, then I go to pay the bill.

Paying ends up taking over an hour. Especially after waiting a week for parts, this was getting ridiculous. After trying many times to run my credit card and them contacting the card people locally, I am asked for another card, even though I had used it without a problem the previous day at a supermarket.This (also VISA) card also does not work either. I call my bank in the US who can see that the card was not run properly. After more attempts their faulty card reader, I am told that I will have to get cash from an ATM machine. I do go to an ATM, which charges me for three withdrawals because of a $200 limit on each withdrawal.

The saga continues because not only did they not reimburse the extra cost of getting money to pay their almost $500 bill, I was later discovered that my camera was taken from my tank bag while it was inside the shop! I know. M2y bad for leaving it at the shop.

The bottom line is to NOT expect anything but a ripoff from Motos del Perú. I have spent many years observing, coaching, and training car and motorcycle dealerships around the world, and have ridden about 250,000 kilometers traveling on a motorcycle over the past eight years in Europe, Africa, and 3.5 round trips to & from South America from the US. While I met the owner, Felipe, I will avoid like the plague, doing business there on my way back north in 2017.

I thought about writing to the owner, but decided that I have more interest in warning my fellow travelers. Besides, Felipe is on this thread and can read about my experience at his place.

Hi Chris, terrible news that I found here.

First of all receive my apologies, I didn't know the delay with the sprockets and the issue with the camera. With this bad experience that our shop gave you, personally I'll take strict actions to improve our service.

About the issue with your camera, let me review our records of the CCTV to discover the problem.

In all the cases, please contact me when you return to Lima.

I can recommend motosdelperu. With their help , I suspended tvip in april , came back now and in 2,3 I was ready to ride again. Also got some repairs done, everything okay. Felipe speaks English, too

We contacted Motos del Peru. Unfortunately they don't repair bikes anymore (only sell them). Instead we came out at DOCUMOTO. Peter the owner is helpful and friendly. Good alternative when you need repairs in Lima.
