I have a Western Digital 250GB passport HD which works from a USB. I don't have any problems. Is yours a bigger drive?

USB 1.1 only on your laptop?
Quote:
Probably you dont get enough power because your ext HD is a USB 2.0 device. USB 2.0 devices like HDs require considerably more power than what the standard USB 1.0 (1.1) can deliver. Otherwise you can try with a hub with external mains supply.
