SD Card - Slide style holder?
 

Hey guys, I've been searching and I've not seen what I'm looking for both shopping, how-to's but also to see if anyone else here has mentioned a desire for it.

I'm planning for Africa toward the end of 2010 and thinking of 4-6 months riding. I'll be filming with a GoPro Hero HD on the bike along side my photo-camera (also SD card) which films in AVCHD Lite and maybe another SD card based camera.

Weighing up the options of a mechanical hard drive versus multiples of SD cards I favour the cards, as in smaller denominations I could lose 1-2 and not be as heartbroken as having a hard drive fail on me and losing the whole lot.

So the question is: I'm looking for a case type holder to carry approximately 30 SD cards... I was thinking something in the style of a slide holder. But of course, I'd want it in something like a Pelican case. Has anyone here seen one? Know how to make one... tips, suggestions, offers to sell me one... are more than welcome. :clap: :thumbup1:

Gepe make a range of card cases, but, for the same reasons you don't want to use a hard drive, the bigger the case, the more you can loose in one hit:eek3:

Hi mate, yeah I'll take that into account. :cool4: I was thinking of loss through mechanical/technical failure rather than theft/accidental loss. I'll keep that in mind though. Funny how you get a mental image of things... I was thinking of a small plastic briefcase with 2 rows of 15 SD cards racked up.
I guess I should re-think it over.

IMHO SD cards, or even micro ones, are a cool idea, but what do you gain by keeping all your full ones with you? Duplicate at a suitable pc when you have access, and post two seperately when you have the chance?

You could use mikroSD cards with a few mikro to SD adapters and 30 mikroSD cards could be in one matchbox .

You could even buy a mini mikroSD card reader and bring 60 mSD cards. Then you could backup your cards everytime you get to an internet cafë

I have two Gepe cases. A basic which is fine but has a plastic hinge. The one I prefer is the extreme which feels a lot more sturdy as it has a steel hinge pin. They're dust and waterproof and pretty tough. It's easy to double up the amount of SD cards you can store in each case by holding them together with small elastic bands or insulation tape. In fact they're better when full like this as they can't rattle about inside if they come out of the silicon grip.

Flash memory is so cheap now it's the way to go. I have carried a 250GB harddrive with me before and I kept it in an inside pocket in my jacket and it was fine, even off road. But once you've got files on an SD card they're pretty safe as long as you don't lose them.
