Reliability of Nikon digital camera and Apple iBook
 

I'm planning to go RTW with a Nikon 5000 and an iBook with CD burner. I read the other posts here about how to pack a notebook computer, as well as a warning about the memory card trap door on the camera (I'll put some duct tape on it, I guess).

Do you have any experience travelling with an Apple notebook and/or a Nikon camera (5000/995/990/etc...)? Any problems?

Do you know of any battery charger for Nikon cameras that can be connected to the accessory plug on a motorcycle?

I used a Coolpix 950 for a one year's trip, and have no complaints, actually I'm very satisfied with it. I chose a Lowerpro hip bag with rain cover and that too worked great(despite the warnings about carrying the camera on your hip, it survived a couple of falls).

Regarding the charger, get the DC voltage and wattage input, then find an adjustable 12V adaptor with output settings in the same range, cut the power cord and mount your own. I think this should work just fine.

I can't give you any answers regarding camera's,... But I have been using an Apple Ibook for two years now. I have been working all around Europe and I always took it with me. I used even on building sites, driving with the route66 software,.... I am using my labtop dailly.
It is pretty banged up that's for shure but it still works!!! I think it's amazing considering what it has been through.
Some suggestions:
* get the 12V-socket adaptor. So that you can hook it up to a 12V socket. Works great.
* always use your battery till the near 'end' if possible. After two years I can still work about 4 hours on my labtop.
* when travelling ALWAYS take a Norton Utlilities with you. Because of the banging around the hard disk might get a little confused. With the Norton tools you can easely solve this problem yourself.
* put a sort of thin cover on you keyboard. this will avoid the keyboard 'scratching' your screen during transport.

I believe it's the ideal portable for the traveller. Consider getting a online support contract for one year and ask Apple if you can use it in any apple store world wide. That way if you have any problems you can try getting online help in an internet cafe or you'll have to find an apple store. But my experience is that thay will surely try to help you.

this may be a bit late for your trip but maybe not.
I use a Nikon 990 for work everyday great camera, burns through batteries big time. I used a 950 for a while, the battery cover is crap kind of cheesy. I havent heard of a car/bike adapter but you might look into rechargable batteries, 2-3 sets, and a solar recharger. I use a Mac Ibook (older blue plastic) I have found them reliable, OSX is very sturdy, instant download from the nikon.
Consider what you will do with the photos once your nikon RAM is max'd out, if you load them on your hard drive the computer could be damaged or stolen. if you have an internet connection with your mac you can upload your photos to apples Idisc online storage, free too!
Remember Jpegs are good for sending via email but save in a TIFF otherwise jpeg will lose quality everytime you save them.
