AKA the Gimp...

It is a freeware photoediting program that this being called better then photoshop.. I have just upgraded my cameras and photoshop CS2 does not suport the Raw files.. and Adobe will not be making a patch. :nono: (I am just glad i did not pay for CS2 in the first place :rolleyes2:). So I am not willing to give adobe any money for a porgram will be obsolete in a years time.

So my question is has anyone used the The gimp (please be adults) :innocent:.
Any optinions? It has a raw plug in but i dont know for which cameras (Ufraw plug in... ):(

I realise it's a while since you posted this, but...

GIMP is a great photo editing program, it runs on Windows and Linux (and possible Mac). The latest version (I run 2.4.5 on my Linux PC) has most of the abilities of Photoshop, although the iWarp filter (in Distorts) is not as good as the liquefy function in Photoshop.

If you're coming to the GIMP from Photoshop, you'll have to get used to where things are (Layers, for instance, isn't in Image, it's in Tools.).

I don't have the plugin problem with Linux and the camara I have, so I can't advise on that issue.

There is a good book on the Gimp - "Beginning GIMP - From Novice to Professional" by Akkana Peck published by Apress.

If you're wondering whether or not to use the GIMP, download and run it. Its free after all.

Yes GIMP is the best free source image editing port for any PC platform almost like "Photo$hop" with lots of plug-in options, there is a port of it called "GIMP-shop" which uses the same user menu as Photo$hop with the same look and feel..... absolutely free......... :)

I'm using it on FreeBSD UNIX......... GIMP is a very capable image editor, that read and write most image formates right of the camera, can be used to hook up to scanner, flatbed, Nikon Coolscan for negatives and slides.

Any camera plugged in by USB should do, since cameras store there files in the old M$-DOS 16-bit mode on to there storage cards... if that don't work, its a fouled of the camera manufactures, take the storage card out and stuff it in to a external reader and it will work, or best copy the image files to the HD 1st. by your OS.

I can think of two reasons to stay with Photoshop - a HUGE support base and the likelihood of it's availability on many other computers around the world - and the original poster would already have experience of it, which actually makes three reasons. Of course, at the end of the day we have to suit ourselves. It just seems a long way around to get files to a computer when it might have been easier to get a different camera.

I wonder what camera it was? It wasn't mentioned.
