Camera insurance
 

Hey any one use/have their camera gear insured If so who do you use (UK Based)? Cheers

There were a few insurers who used to advertise in the back of the photography mags a while back. They weren't cheap though from what I remember. Best bet is probably to see about getting the stuff on your household insurance. Some companies allow you to pay a small additional premium for specific items - I used to insure my mountain bikes this way, and the cost was pretty small.

I have looked into camera insurance having been a keen amatuer and reluctant pro (!) and never found a decent policy. They are either nearly always prohibitively expensive or, if you read the small print, don't cover you unless your gear is locked in a lead lined safe in a strong room at your local bank protected by a moat full of piranhas and a band of randy, violent criminals armed with rusty meat-hooks.

The best thing you can probably do is just make sure your gear has good cases and good protection from theft.

Look at it this way: if your gear isn't insured then you are more likely to be carrying it with you when that pic of a lifetime happens in front of you!

PS- This is where someone now comes along with a bargain insurance policy covering all your gear for all eventualities! :)

I have household contents insurance with Rias (UK) but you have to be 50+. Over 50s insurance and cover: RIAS
The policy allows a high value on equipment, plus 30 days abroad - not enough for most needs, but I believe it can be extended.

Imaging Insurance Imaging Insurance - image makers photographic insurance services - a company I used to insure with, who offer extensive professional insurance at about half the price of some other professional insurers for photographers who don't have a studio, but work from home.

I have mine as an extension of the house insurance. Named items covered for all risk - new for old replacement. Items up to £1000 are covered automatically as personal goods out of the property.
