Anyone fitted one of these? Tips/things to look out for?

I've got a Yamaha Tdm 900.

I'm looking to make one, being a cheapskate. One problem I've got is the road bike has a standard quick release front wheel whereas the mountainbike has a bigger bolt through affair and it wouldn't be right if it only fitted one sort.
The Bikes a 3AJ Tenere so not massively different to yours on the scale of things. I've already made an ugly pannier rack for it. I'd like to ride one to feel if it changes much, I suspect not at single cylinder speeds as long as I'm still comfy on the seat.

I cobbled this up from parts of a Yakima car top rack. Mine doesn't stick out nearly as far behind the motorcycle, and I can still feel it back there. A bicycle is light, but way back there it has some leverage, not sure I would want to ride like the one in your link.
