We've had a number of requests, and we know that there are a lot of bicycle travellers using our site for overland information, so here's your opportunity to ask questions and help others out with tech and travel information.

Excellent idea!
On a couple of occassions on motorcycle trips I have found myself thinking 'Geez, this is tough'/'Yikes, this is a scary section', and just around the next bend, some mad cyclist will be steadily making their way through the same section.
RESPECT!
... and then there was the one who beat me to the bottom of a section of twisty Swiss Alpine road. MAD!

I'm travelling in a 4x4 now, so maybe can provide more help to any mad cyclist that runs into difficulty/runs out of steam.

Look out for Spud. He has traded his motorised 2 wheels for the manual kind and him and his lovely wife are riding from Kathmandu to Australia later this year.

Im a cyclist too but not RTW yet, only off-roading stuff.

so, shells youre on 4WD now eh!? whereabout? down under?
done a bit of travelling from NSW to S.A and back in an old corona in 96 & again in'97 from Sydney to Adelaide and back, in a new Mitsubishi Lancer in '97!

Rocky mountain great divide trail
 

Any adventourus bicyclists headed up or down the great divide trail here in the rocky mountains Helena montana USA. We have camping and resupply/mailing address.

It's also good for those of us on slow small motorcycles.

We need to educate these people about the invention of the internal combustion engine, only joking! Bicycles are a great way to travel and actually take in the sights, smells (road kill) and sounds. I recently read a book (Headwinds) about a couple who circumnavigated Australia on bicycles, an amazing story.
On a trip across the Simpson Desert in '03 I was suprised to meet up with the support crew in a 4WD for a group of bicycles crossing the desert. Sometimes I was flat out getting the 4wd over the dunes let alone a push bike. You meet all sorts in the Simpson.
Take Frank who attended the '07 Tiltaldra Vic HU Meeting earlier this year who intended to do the crossing riding a Honda with a chair attached. I never did hear how Frank got on.
On another occasion I met a lone rider on the road to the Henbury Meteorite Crater near Alice Springs, now this is an isolated road with the worst corrigations that I have ever seen.
To get to the point, I welcome all travellers on 2 or 4 wheels. Get out and enjoy this great country of ours.

This is the perfect addition to the site. I feel that for those of us that love traveling freely there are a plethora of options...biking being another great option. I remember when I lived in Ecuador meeting some guys that were riding horseback around all of South America. They, too, had some great stories.

Myself and my best mate dylan have both been london cylce couriers in the past , which meant cycling 100 miles a day in any weather.we have also cycled 3700 mile across the states on our mountainbikes and across europe, so this adventure bike lark seems like luxury at times.

we now have motor bikes too, myself a KLE 500 and Dylan an africa twin, the fact is a lot of the same kit and know how from our cycle trips can be used on our motorbike trips.

I love love the fact you can carry so much more on a motorbike, weight is not much of an issue as it is on push bikes.

anything on two wheels inspires adventure.

Good post flipperboy.
Have you tried using push-bike panniers on a motorbike? I have speculated about this a bit - maybe using some of the lightweight stuff as tankbags draped over the fuel tank.
The cycling kit is quite cheap compared with the trade names in the motorbiking world!!

i have't tried it yet, but my mate used to use Karrimor cycle panniers on his honda shadow and they were fine.

i also have adapted some karrimor lowrider front cycle panniers to fit on my engine bars of my Kle 500, they are perfect for carrying a 5 liter plastic jerry can of fuel in each on those long trips, mountainbike gear is pretty tough really. it has to be.

As long as you attach stuff securely to your bike , should be ok

Havent figure -out how to carry my push-bike on the dommie for my weekend rides. Saw loads of picture on ADVrider forum though....

From Bicycle To Motorbike
 

Friends,

I used to do a great deal of long-distance bicycle touring fully loaded. Now in my middle-aged soft-belly years I have moved into the motorbike world and plan on continuing my two-wheel travel.

I bicycled all over New Zealand a dozen years ago. I will post my route and a link to a detailed web page in a future post.
