My big end started to rattle on the way back from Poland
. I eventually had to abandon it in Belgium and go back with car and trailer to collect it.Bitterly disappointed that this should happen at such a low mileage. Seems it is a failing with them but Alpha bearings have a cure. Other than that was a great trip, the bigger tank would have made life easier with its 400 miles plus range. 90+Mpg. http://www.our-site.me.uk/bike/larry/P1000230.JPG regards |

It started rattling in Czech republic, but I continued into Poland for my primary objective, the 'Flytrap' then rode it back across Germany to Antwerp. by the n the speedo was showing 13K miles.
Two things were the cause. first the case hardening on the crankpin started to flake near the oil exit hole, and the Electronic ignition module was firing a tad early. Pity I did not have points as then I could've correct that easily. I now have a bigger stronger crankpin and a bigger bearing installed. For about a third of the cost of an electronic ignition fault on my Volvo. Odd to think a crankshaft assembly is a third the cost of ignition fault. Being mechanical I had enough warning of impending failure to complete my trip objective. My current tank supposedly holds 14.5 litres. although I have never managed to put as much as 12 litres in it even after running on reserve for a while. I had hoped to use the 22 litre tank but did not have the time or inclination to fit it. So for my trip I was limited to 240 miles or less between fillings. I am at this moment in the process of changing the timing by fooling the electronics as to where TDC is. It does not really know anyway and just guesses by dividing the time between revolutions. Now it will know even less. If I can make it completely dumb, it might even work properly. |
