Diesel engines

I've read a bit about this topic in the HUBB and elsewhere but the information seems to be scattered around in here and does not relate to any particular type of bike - nor does the subject matter fit easily into any single forum, so this one will have to do!

Here's an article about BMW development of diesel engines in bikes - in this case they have shoe-horned a 3 series car engine onto a 2 wheeled frame:-

Biodiesel-powered BMW breaks world land speed record - Motorcycle News - MCN

It would be of interest to get contributions pulled together here from anyone who knows what the future may be for diesel powered bikes.
Any sort of speculation about the impact on bike design, running costs, service intervals or the implications for long-distance riding would be good to see as well!

And a bit more:-
