Thumbs up VW Transporter T3 timing belt change

This weekend i helped with changing a timing belt on a 1986 VW T3 transporter 1.6 diesel (Vanagon). Changing the belt is reasonably simple task, however getting access to the belt is a whole different story. A bit of welding was required to release stubborn and annihilated hex bolts from the crankshaft pulley.

VW transporter T3 timing belt replacement

For those thinking about changing a timing belt on a VW T3 / Vanagon / Transporter; consider changing the waterpump too. Its just an hour extra work and the costs of the waterpump. The work on changing a waterpump on a T3 is similar to changing the timing belt - quite a few hours of work.
