Has anyone any experience on the above?

There are a few coming onto the market as part of the MOD replacement program, and they have a ladder chassis which could take a camper box.

Prices look good, but I can't find out if they're any faster than a Unimog on-road etc. Look well within 7.5T for a 4x4 truck.

Any comments?

No ownership experience, but I did look into these a while back.

One thing you will discover is that they are extremely unpopular with the army. There was an expensive refit to correct a series of faults and a lot have been cannabalised to keep the fleet running. Steering, hubs and brakes are apparently weak points.

On paper they look good - good weight capacity, decent axles, zf boxes and a solid Perkins powerplant. So there could be the basis of a sound truck somewhere in there. I spoke to someone who ran one as a camper and he seemed fairly pleased with it. Perhaps he is on here?

Many thanks for the reply. A night on the beer in front of the PC brought to the fore the brake issue, but the general consensus was that these were more of the 'b@stard child' truck than planned.

However.... a lot of money was thrown at sorting the issues so I may have a trek down to have a look at a couple (thanks to the c/crunch - I have time on my hands).

Mr. K, if you fancy meeting up in M/cr, let me know. I'm based out of Stockport. I'm more of an off-road biker than camper. Looking for a camper / mobile workshop as I'm contract staff within the UK / Europe as a trade - need to live & prep the bike for race days.

Had one of these with an access platform on and used for tree work.
Nice to drive - even on the motorway, a bit slugish on the hills, comparable to the MAN 8.136 i now have as a camper. Cab is quite well sound proofed, and roomy. Basic 4x4- no diff locks from memory. Didnt have any brake issues and got parts easy enough when the clutch slave cylinder went. Lots of them about as access platforms used by the utlilities for line work. I think would be quite a good base for a camper, i considered one at the time but none available. Down to price- what are they fetching? The MANs are getting quite expensive now along with mogs..

Good to hear something positive about the RB44. There isn't much choice in the mid-weight 4x4 class and the army will be letting plenty of these go. They are very cheap if you look around. Military versions do have a DL, not sure what other differences there are.

Or register for the tender sales as there are often rb44's in that too

My mate bought a couple of civvi versions which seem to have better axles and none of the problems of the mil version

and of course the wonderfull 900x16 tyre, am I glad to soon have a truck that takes an easier to find tyre now
