tunisia prep

Hi guys I'm going to tunisia in feb with my discovery 1 at the moment it's just bog standard 3 door dicovery so I was woundering what mods you guys would recamend for a 10 day trip in tunisia I won't be going to adventurous as I'm traveling on my own but would like to get out in to the desert a bit.

Hi, obviously depends on plans and budget but I know when we did our first trip the things we valued most were additional water storage, water filter, a fridge, additional fuel storage. Rooftent was a godsend as wildcamping can be a pain in a ground tent if conditions arent good. Also, make sure you have tie-down points in the back to hold gear down on poor terrain. Diffguards etc would also be advisable.

Thanks for the reply,I've got the water and fuel covered diff gaurds are a good idear and not to much money.I was wondering about raised air intake (snorkel) for the dust.I have a T Max deul battery kit I can fit and what do you think about fitting a winch as I'm traveling alone and I have one anyway? so won't cost me.As for the roof tent I have one but wasn't going to use it due to the height off the truck.What shocks will be good I can't afford OME so I was woundering if the brit part shocks are any good.also what kind of tyers are needed I have A/t's fitted at the moment with good tread and two spares.
As for the route I don't really have one but I'd like to get down to Douz and the if some people are heading out in to the desert I hope I can tag alone I have a bit of desert driving experience in Namibia but it was hard going on my own so I think much better with others.

Gary, there's pages of Disco prep just down the screen and lots more on here if you do a search. Tour operators also do good checklists. I assume it's a 1 or 2.

No to snorkels, winches and fridges. Extra cost and weight that you don't need.

Maybe to dual battery, but what you going to run off it and where do you put the battery if you don't fit a snorkel (if its a 1)?

Yes to servicing, diff guards, replacing mechanicals and electrics that are not in tip top condition, and personally, the roof tent. The most important thing for a solo trip is peace of mind, so spend money on things that could go wrong if you don't.

Cost of good shocks is insignificant in terms of what the trip's costing you in fuel and ferry. Good shocks are essential on a Disco.

Your tyres will be fine, as long as they're not re-treads.

It's all personal opinion of course, and someone else on here will tell you I'm completely wrong!

Remember locals will drive on what they've got and 10 days aint a long trip and you won't be taking massive risks. If your shocks are getting warm then stop and have a cuppa while they cool

As long as the vehicle is mechanically sound - including battery , alternator starter etc then you should be fine

Winches are not alot of good in desert travel unless you can find something to winch off

Diff guards are probabily good

Can you kit the disco to sleep inside it , saves on tentage and makes camp setup quick

If it has an imobliser then get it removed, they always go wrong at the worse possible times

take sand matts and a GOOD compressor so you can air down your tyres
