Xinjiang China Autumn 2009

I am in the very early stages of "planning" a bike trip around Xinjiang province in North-West China in the Autumn 2009. My basic idea at the moment is to buy a bike in China and head off around the oases of the Taklamakan desert. Dunhuang to Kashgar, possibly a "lap" of the Taklamakan (if time permits; looking at around a month, more if I can get the time). As it is prohibitively expensive/difficult/restrictive to take my own bike in, I though buying one there would be a better option; I have seen the blogs of other foreigners who have done this in China. So, is anybody interested? I have cross posted this in the Northern Asia/Travellers Seeking Travellers forums.

Buying a bike will get you a set of wheels, but would still be illegal. You'll need to have a Chinese drivers licence to ride around with insurance.

But hey, good luck! Kashi is great for sure, great place to regain strenght would be the St John's bar over there! (order nr. 150, noodle soup. Would almost fly back to Kashi for that one) Xinjiang quisine is absolutely great!

Yeah, technically illegal, but then again, others have done it successfully. It will be a gamble, unless I can find a way around it. To do it legally is bizarrely expensive (1500 euros for the paperwork and around 100 a day for the "guide"). This is a non-starter for me. So, the whole trip will be a risk, but what is life without risk?
