Across Russia (and anywhere in Europe) you are seldom far from a Bancomat (ATM cash dispenser) so the usual and safest thing is just take your Bank Cards - possibly with a backup card stored elswhere about you/your vehicle.

I have no experience and cannot cannot comment on "Iran Turkmsnistan uzbebistan Kazzkhstan" but suspect the same.

When travelling I usually carry a small suppy of Dollars or Euros (Euros particularly in western RUS) hidden away, but have never resorted to them.

bank plastic is your best friend.

Except in your case Iran (which is not connected electronically to western banks and sources of funds) and Uzbekistan which is a bit retarded and has only one or two bank machines in the whole country.

In those two countries, dollars or euros are your friend. Pretty much everywhere else, plastic is the smarter way to go.

Yep, Iran without any cash could really be an unforgettable experience these days!!

But it is an exception. And normally you can get money from ATM´s almost anywhere these days. Better to have more than 1 card, though.

I´d still carry also some cash (USD/Euro) in a well hidden place, because sometimes the ATM just isn´t there when you need it.
