Be careful taking out money in Uzbekistan then leaving the country with too much cash. We had a huge hassle at the border because we had picked up cash in a hotel in Tashkent.

Some waypoints

Hi all,

for future reference, here's a few waypoints of ATM's in Central Asia that all work with Mastercard/Cirrus/Maestro cards. Many should also work with Visa but I haven't tried.

Uzbekistan
We only changed cash dollars to som because the rate is so much better on the black market. However, to stock up on dollars (that you can then change to som):
  • Bukhara: Asaka Bank (N39.77188 E64.43924), a 10-minute walk from the Old Town
  • Khiva: the Asia Hotel has an ATM (N41.37435 E60.35863)

Kyrgyzstan
A lot of Visa logo's, but we found almost no Mastercard/Cirrus/Maestro ATM's. Only at Kazkommertz Bank we've been able to use our MC. Here's a few locations:
  • Bishkek: N42.87434 E74.61769 and N42.87598 E74.61641
  • Osh: N40.54300 E72.80069 (located under the Taj Mahal Hotel and not very far from Osh Guesthouse)

Tajikistan
International ATM machines we used:
  • Khorog: N37.49222 E71.54968
  • Dushanbe: N38.55879 E68.76280

Hopefully this saves people some time, spending hours or even days trying out half-working ATM machines is no fun

-Olaf

Most Atms are for local cards so will need to find one with a Visa Sign on it.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
