UK to Ulaanbatar (Mongolia)?

Has anybody driven to Mongolia via Serbia, Turkey, Georgia and Russia then Kazhastan, Russia, Mongolia rather than going direct via Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazhastan, Russia, Mongolia?

I am currently planning a trip in 2 years time and was just wondering if there is anybody out there who has done it just to get some ideas about difficult bits on the trip apart from border crossings?

Cheers
Flo

It's not difficult, just a long way

I went to Ulaanbataar by motorbike in 2004. I went through Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Russia to Mongolia. Apart from the road between Krasnojarsk and Irkutsk, were the road occasionaly is bad, there are no real difficulties. For the route and some pictures, see my website Welcome to Wonderful Travels.

Have a good trip, Mart Heijnens

This thread has been moved.
"Travellers' Advisories, Safety and Security on the Road" is not the correct best for a question about routes and road info to Mongolia.
"Northern Asia" is the more appropriate forum.

We did that trip with the exceptiong of going from Georgia to Azerbaijian and by ferry to Kazakhstan. Details on the route here

What info are you after specifically. It´s a pretty straight forward route really. Find tyres and spares will be the biggest headache. Pays to send stuff forward so some address.

Getting from Europe to Mongolia is not particularly "difficult" and there are a number of different ways to go. Lots of people have done that GENERAL route you have described ... with a few exceptions ... you either have to go north of the Caucasus or south of them ... you cant do both at present. Coming from Georgia or Azerbaijan, the Russian border is closed to non CIS citizens. The only way to get across them would be by flying from Yerevan in Armenia to the Russian North Caucasus.

You are going to have to decide from Turkey if you take the south Caucasus route thru Georgia and Azerbaijan ... or if you take a ferry from Trabzon in Turkey to the Russian North Caucasus ... Novorossiisk and Sochi i believe are ferry destinations from Turkey.

Its possible that in 2 years time there may be ferries running between North Eastern Turkey and Sukhumi (Abkhazia). That would be a fun development. No-ones really ridden there, since its been a conflict zone since the break up of the USSR ... but I would expect at some stage over the next 2 years that the Abkhaz - Russian border (and a ferry port in Sukhumi) MIGHT open for us foreigners. Abkhazia is a natural tourist destination but they need to work out a way to get tourists in. Opening the Russian border, an Airport and a ferry port to tourists is the only way they will be able to get them in. You would then be able to do the Russian North Caucasus and on to Atirau in northern KZ that way.
