Turkmenistan

Hi there.
I have just been through Turkmenistan for 10 days with Stantours and if somebody wants to know something about it, don't hesitate to contact me. T-stan was awesome but you need at least ten days to see the really beautiful places. Just transitting through Karakom desert will not do the country justice at all.
Stantours were great from A to Z and their guide in T-stan brilliant.

I'll be in Turkmenistan hopefully in 2 months. I wouldn't mind seeing it, but the cost for the compulsory guide is prohibitive so i'm trying for a transit visa, any idea how hard these are to get?

I was with Eric in Turkmenistan and can back up what he says. But transit visas are relatively easy from what I've been hearing. Don't know which way you're coming from but you should allow 5 days unless you want to pay extra and you must already have a visa for the exit country, ie Uzbek or Iran. Ankara is relatively easy (I got mine there) and I've heard that Tehran or Mashad in Iran are quite good. No turkmen embassy in Syria, Azerbaijan or Georgia.

Tashkent has not given any one hassles but it can take some time.

Good Luck
George

I've been in Turkmenistan one year ago with a transit visa.

I agree that working with Stantours makes your life easy. I'm in Mongolia now heading for the "stans" and David Burgoff at Stantours has been very helpful.

I can back up reports on David.
Very helpful in arranging visas over the web, also does the extra mile for u in person. Was a great help when we had to get a replacement visa for Russia at short notice.
