The Stans - Tank range and Altitude?
Will be riding through the Stans this summer - and carrying a backup 5 litre jerry can on the bike. I estimate this will extend my tank range to around 265 miles / 425 km.

My instincts and initial research are telling me this will be sufficient - Am I right or wrong?


We'll be riding the Pamir Highway from OSH to KHOROG. Would welcome any feedback from those who've previously been that way about the effects (if any) of altitude at the higher points of the route.

All comments and advice welcome.

Hi Mystic,

You will have enough fuel. Of course you will not be able to refuel in petrol station ( last you will find about 80 km from Osh towards Tajikistan) but you will be able to refuel in Sary Tash


Then you will find petrol in Murgab.
Next petrol station is in Khorog or in Ishkashim if you will go near Wakhan (recomended).
Consuption at high altitude is much higher. My @ need about 9 liter per 100 km.

AMS is serious and it is really difficult to say what will happen. I have travelled in this region with more than 30 person and some of them had problems. Avoid sleeping between Kyzyl Art pass and Murgab.

From your experience ....... how available is standard Unleaded fuel ... as opposed to Leaded fuel ... across the Stans generally (excluding Mongolia)?

From what I've read, the advice on Altitude Sickness seems to be to try wherever possible to sleep at as low an altitude as possible - so pretty much fits with your comment about Kyzyl Art pass and Murgab. Guess different people are more prone to problems than others!

Unleaded? Somtimes, somewhere. Better forget about catalysator. Leave it in UK.

1. You have to observe yourself
2. Visit Song Kul in Kyrgyzstan and spent 2-3 nights there, it is over 3000 meters and will help you to adapt to altitude. (Song Kul is worth to spend a life there)
3. Stay for a while on Kyzyl Art ( you will have to because there is a Tajik post there) if you will feel ok maybe it is good idea to camp near Karakol - sunrise is amazing near the lake...

Sambor, I think we used the same "petrol station" in Sary Tash.

Our normal riding range was ~400km to a tank, and up there a bit less (DR650), and we only ever had problems because everywhere in one town was sold out, so we had to ask around for a while until we found someone with some in their shed.

You can always find it in towns, sometimes it may just take longer and cost a bit more.
