Temporary Vehicle Import Costs

Afternoon all,

Im just looking around for costs on importing vehicles in central asia/caucasus. I read somewhere that Tajikistan for example is $20 whereas Turkmenistan is >$200 :helpsmilie: if you use a 5 day transit visa.

Does anybody have any data to add for countries visited? I know a lot of you are on bikes so that data will also help others who find this post.

Depending on cost I may decide to visit/not visit some countries (Turkmenistan for example!).

Cheers,

G

Are these charges for temporary importation still payable if you have a carnet?

In theory no but you dont NEED a Carnet for these countries and the cost of that is considerably more.

From my experience in West Africa you may also have trouble getting them to stamp the carnet which may bring problems further along your route if you don't have a continuous journey... just a thought.

Most fees are nominal anyhow with, it seems, exception to Turkmenistan.

I suppose that was my real point, as I hope to be coming through Iran I will have a carnet so am hoping for no TIP fee in Turkmenistan because of that, is that the case?

You need to buy insurance for Russia and Again for Kaz. I paid about $20 for six months of Russian Insurance and about $12 for 3 months of Kaz Insurance.

A carnet is not going to help at all if the country is not a signatory to the carnet system. IF they dont process them them they dont process them. Russia will only process ATA carnets. Not sure about other countries. Turkmenistan fees are a fuel tax. So carnet will not stop it.

Basically if I am trying to get to the jist of your question, its of zero value to you in the stans

uk_vette 15 Jan 2013 07:33

Are there two types of carnets?

A "carnet" as issued by RAc
and an ATA carnet?

or are they both the same thing, with a different name?

I like your trip. I am planing to go through Turkmenistan in july. Did you have touristvisa from before, or did you get that at the border together with temp import. Do you remember how much temp import was in Usbekistan?, or anyone?

:palm:
