Russian motor insurance in Ulan Ude

This is a copy of the post I just put under 'Trip Paperwork'. I hope it may be of help to someone:

If you are entering Russia, using the Ulaanbaatar to Ulan Ude route, you may find that there are no insurance kiosks at the border. It is possible to buy insurance in Ulan Ude, but not all insurance companies seem to be set up to deal with temporary cover.

After a false start with Angara, who insisted that we needed official translations of our driving licences and vehicle title, then kept us waiting for two hours before giving up entirely because "our vehicles were not registered on the Russian database" (no shit, Sherlock) - we were referred to Rosgosstrakh (aka 'RGS Group'), who dealt with the whole thing in about 5 minutes flat.

The fact that we had the translations probably speeded things up, but don't bother to get them done at home. They cost 100 rbls each from Angara's translation service, and I'm sure there must be other similar services locally.

I'll pitch in with my own experience. You can purchase insurance from pretty much any major city. E.g., Alpha insurance (Страховая компания) has offices all over Russia. Their website is pretty easy to navigate, even with rudimentary Russian. Open :

then click on the dotted word next to "Город:" (means city) and enter the city name in cyrillic. Wait until the popup shows your city and select it (if there is any office in that city). E.g., paste "Улан-Удэ" for Ulan-Ude.

Next to the addresses, there is a link called "На карте", which brings you to the map for this particular office. Or enter the address on Google maps and let it guide you through the traffic.

We did just that, stepped into the office with passport, car registration and customs declaration form in hand (it helps, because it will have the main info in cyrillic). Then chose your plan and duration, give the money and walk out with your paper, takes about 10 minutes. All without speaking Russian (and the lady didn't do better in English)..

I think Alpha Insurance was the one I did it in Ulan Ude last time.

That was easy.

I still think I can send a waypoint to colebatch for that.

But I can do that when I come back home from mongolia.

Still I think it is better to get a insurance over the whole time when you enter Russia more than one time ( which most people do.)

If you have an accident or you get stopped by police on the way from border to UU, then you are in trouble or at leat it did not save you any money.

And to be honest, the cost of insurance if you do it for 2 month or so, are woth it to keep you away from any problems.

Maybe It helps when we can collect waypoints on insurance for the most border crossings in Russia used by travellers.

Maybe, as long as people don't rely on them too much--most of these border insurance places are little kiosks or shacks that may or may not be there from season to season.

No, I ment more the borders where there are no Insurance kiosks.

Like UB to Ulan Ude and so on.

At the main borders there are always some kiosks around.
