Tell me an easy route UK --> Ulaanbaatar

Hello all seasoned travelers, may I take some short time to wish you all the very best for 2012, and many miles of safe, happy riding.

For myself, I am considering another Toyota 4X4 trip for 2012.
Having done Scandinavia, Europe, Morocco, etc, I am looking for different.

I would like to guage people experience of those that have done this route, and how you got on with visa's.

I would like to consider some thing like UK to Ulaanbaatar.
From Ulaanbaatar I would consider a second part of the trip into China.

I know China doesn't make it easy for foreign vehicles, but just one step as a time.

Opinions and routes into Ulaanbaatar would be most welcome.

An Easy Route?

London, Warsaw, Daugavpils, Moscow, Tolyatti, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan Ude, Ulaan Baatar.

Its all asphalt and you only cross 3 borders ... UK-Schengen, Shengen-Russia, Russia-Mongolia.

Thats an easy route.

You only need 2 visas, Russia and Mongolia.

Hi Colebatch,

Thanks for your input, very much appreciated.
So UB can actually be done, by just getting a Russia and a Mongolia visa.

Great,

Vette,

Were heading that way in 2013 so if your trip slips, let us know. Leaving UK early Jan and will be around Mongolia in July/August hopefully.

Hi Griffdowg,
Nice looking Landy in your profile.
The basic plan is to do almost the same that Rob did.
His topic is here
Trips and Trip Reports - To Mongolia and back summer 2010 WARNING LOTS OF PHOTOS! • Land Cruiser Club and Forum
Rob had a great time, and really enjoyed the time in Mongolia.
I have an ambition of consideration to see if one can get into Inner Mongolia, (which is really China) and onto Hohot, (Inner Mongolia capital) via Sainshands to Erenhot.

Erenhot is the Mongolia and Inner Mongolia border town.
I have read all the info about entry resrtictions but any way,

From Russia I think entering Mongolia via the M52 at the Tashanta border crossing, is by far the better option.

Plan to turn off the M51, and head south on the M52 towards Tashanta.
I have read that the border crossing there is not difficult, then a directly Eastern route to UB.

At last we're thinking about another trip, this time UK to Mongolia and back, again 2-up by bike. I like the sound of the above route for ease of travel although would not rule out any interesting diversions! At the moment, though, I'd be interested to know what is the best time of the year for such a trip weather wise.

Any other relevant info would also be welcome.

Hi,

I'm also looking to do a similar route hopefully in 2013, thanks for some good info.

Cheers Mark
