Tajik-Afghan borders closed

Hi,

Just a heads up, the Tajik-Afghan borders in Badakhshan seem to be closed at the moment due to a Cholera outbreak on the Afghan side. The staff at the Khorog info center says the Ishkashim border market is also not happening because of this.

As noted in another thread, it is even worse when you are on the other side.
We heard about reports from last year, when the border was closed due to the fights in Khorog, but travellers could sneak through by bribing. This was not possible this time. So you have to rely on your embassy to get you out. Not all embassies are theat responsive, so perhaps best is to be American and better to not be covered by the Brits (a motorbiker ended up in going all the way to Kabul, after waiting over 8 days).
Having said that, if going to the Wakhan you should very well consider the risk of not beeing let through back to Tajikistan. In the aftermath we learnt, that the Tajiks are closing more often than thought the frontier for some time (2-4 weeks). They use then epidemies as reason, in this case it was true as near Faizabad were some people ill of cholera, but at other occasions, this was just a simple excuse for closing the frontier, without any substance.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
