Shipping Sydney to Vladivostok 2010

We are looking at putting our bikes in a 20' container to ship them from Sydney to Vlad in about May 2010. Three of us are going to ride across to Europe. Does anyone want to put their bikes in our container to share the costs. I rode to Vladivostok from London in 2008 and know the ropes and have a few contacts.

I would probably, look into flying your bike - its not as expensive as you imagine. The other idea you may want to research is flying into Korea and transporting or riding across the country to the ferry. Take the ferry to Zarabino. The port here is much easier to deal with. I can give you a step by step if you go to this port.

I heard from a few people and you will find this information on this website that the customs are a pain in the a in Vladivostok. They take ages to sort your paper work out and some people have had to pay someone to arrange it. On top of all that, your visa is ticking down and your paying well over $100 a night at a hotel - unless you get in contact with the iron tigers motorbike club who help motorbike travellers out with a place to stay if its not taken already.

Thanks matey. We are only getting prices at the moment. I have a good agent in Vlad and stayed at the Iron Tigers last year, so know the ropes a little. all info gratefully received.

Hi Chris, Are you heading back for some unfinished business on the road of bones?

Last year we sent a container over from Melbourne to Vlad using Silverwind (thanks to HU recommendations). It was a right pain getting the bikes through customs, but I suspect that you will get that regardless of your agent. Despite our troubles I'd still recommend them. From memory we ended up paying ~5000 USD all up for 20' container including fees at both ends. Mike has added the details to the HU shipping database, but ask if you want more details.

G'Day Tim,

After talking to you, Stefan and Matthias at the Horizons Rally, I ditched my plans for South America for a little while and will head east from Vlad to Mongolia, the Russian Alti and enter Europe through the Stans. Only 4 or so months this time. Last year we entered Russia from Norway and Finland. There are 3 or 4 of us going and it would keep costs down a bit if we could get some others to share the container. I'll give you a ring sometime.

another agent

Hey Chris,

Last year I met a shipping agent from Vlad. on the road. She was about to take part in a rally in Mongolia with one rally truck and 5 support 4wd drive cars. (Part of her team did the Dakar rally the year before last - it wouldn't surprise me if they entered this year)

So if you want another contact let me know and I can post her details.

Hey mate,
Five of us in New Zealand are planning to leave from Vlad to Europe in May 2010 as well. We're planning the same thing with a container, and as we'd have to ship via Oz anyway, maybe we could work something out? Only prob could be dates - were you looking to have your bikes there by May, or just ship them in May? We are keen to be on the road in early May.
Would also be real interested if you can recommend an agent in Vlad - I don't know much about things at that end.
Cheers
Rob

Hi see this link: Practical details on driving through Russia and Mongolia (Feb-2005)
read it well there are links inside to other motorbike people etc
couple of us have an idea to ship landrover defenders from NZ to vlad and onwards to Magadan and back to moscow to my family
Do as much research as possible, there are motorbike clubs in Vlad who may be able to help re translating or helping find a "fixer" (one who has "knowledge of the system"
See if they can help you.someone will be able to read english I am sure
If you are really stuck we could write in russian for you
New Zealand consul in Vlad may be of some help maybe not regarding what shipping companies operate between NZ and Vlad as there is some bussiness done via this port

Hi guys,
If you need help in Vladivostok you may find it here. I'll respond to your questions regarding shipping and customs clearance. We do a lot of container shipping for travellers every year here. In and out of Vladivostok. If your car or bike arrives/departs on ferry it is pretty easy to do everything yourself, but if in container it is difficult. You won't be able to do it yourself.

There were a lot of guys from New Zealand and Australia last year.

Chris, maybe we met last year in Vladivostok? Were you with Ron and Neva?

Chris Cowper 13 Jun 2009 13:50

G'day Yuri,

Yes Matey, I was in Vladivostok with Ron and Neva, although I did not ship to Sydney with them, I caught a ferry from Vanino to Sakhalin. If we ship the bikes in a container I will need an agent next year.

Thanks.

Chris Cowper 18 Jun 2009 05:55

G'day Yuri,

Can you send me your e-mail address please. Neva sends her regards.

Blue88 22 Jun 2009 14:01

Chris,

If it was me .. and sadly it isn't :-( ...... I'd seriously consider shipping to Bussan South Korea, ride up to Sok Cho then Dong Chun Ferry to Zarabino/Vladivostok. Wendy Choi @ Aero International for assistance if needed in South Korea.

Arriving in Russia, Andre from Iron Tigers has been known to smooth the waters of entry ... but if Yuri is the same Yuri Melnikov of 'Links', then I met him last year and he helped friends in Vlad to have their vehicle released from Customs Captivity. A good guy.

All the best .. totally jealous .... keep it safe

Chris,
We are, depending on the state of the economy, wanting to ride from Vladivostok to Moskow in May or June next year and want to ship as well. Could be good for us all.

Yuri M 25 Jun 2009 14:22

Hi Chris, my e-mail:ymelnik@links-ltd.com. I just sent message to Neva.
