we are planning a ride to mongolia in 2011, however my time allowed for the trip is very limeted [6weeks max] so was wondering has anybody frieghted a bike back to the uk from mongolia. i realise that if we bust a gut we could do a return trip, but i think we,d miss out on a lot.
cheers paul.

Your options are the following...
  1. Air freight...Air China/DHL, etc...
  2. Rail to Sea...containers run about $4000 USD+.
  3. Ride home.
  4. Sell your bike locally...to a campement owner.
Air freight and rail to sea are equally expensive and maybe not worth it unless you're interested in buying 20 gers to take back home to the UK and sell them?

I helped a couple Dutch guys ended up doing that option. The investment in the gers paid off as those guys sold them back home, and made money in the process.

I think you should consider selling your bike and flying out as well.

Steppenfuchs

Contact the fox of the steppe ... at Steppenfuchs ... a german guy who runs bike tours out of UB.

I met with him last year and he can arrange to have bikes shipped to or from Germany for something like 1200 - 1500 EUR. If you dropped your bike off with him, I would guess in 4-6 weeks it would be in Berlin and you fly over on Easyjet and ride it home.

Are you referring to Vait? I met him in 2007 as well...great friendly German guy. Loved his Merc camper!
In 07, he found it tough to ship other than the methods described above....glad to read about the improvements.

Did you visit his workshop near the Oasis campement? Very handy!

Yep thats him ... I was trying to remember his name ... Vait Scholz I think it is.

I visited his workshop, but have never been to Oasis - I understand its same part of town tho. One of his Mongolian mechanics did some minor work to my BMW ... cant remember what - it was nothing showstopping. but I remember thinking "what a useful contact" ... its handy to have :
(a) some bike mechanics in Mongolia that understand Japanese and European touring motorcycles
(b) a guy in Mongolia that sells motorcycle tyres (technically he is the dealer for MEFO tyres in Mongolia, but usually only has enough stock for his own operation ... but if you give him enough notice and choose what you want from the MEFO catalogue (Mefomenu) he can get it. Think you need to order the tyres before April he said. ( I reckon the Mefo OffRoad Master (18 inch) or Stone Master (17 inch) rear / with Enduro Master front would be good combo for Mongolia)
(c) I spoke with him about logistics and thought its handy to have alternatives to and from Mongolia.

Im heading out to Ulanbator this summer, we are doing a charity rally in a beach buggy... We are looking to export the vehicle out as we have decided we want to do rallies year in year, unfortunately we have had problems with our return russian Visa and have kind of trapped ourselves in Mongolia at the moment! Is this mythical legend still about and do you think he could help us.
