Russian transit visa UK passport holder when on the road
 

I am trying to find out if a UK passport holder can get a Russian transit visa for the crossing between Kazakhstan and Mongolia anywhere other than in the UK. I have seen a post on another forum suggesting it is not possible, does anybody have recent information on this?
Is a transit visa the most suitable for this trip or would a double/multiple entry tourist visa be better as I might be heading back the same way a month later?
I will be out of the UK for more than 3 months by the time of the first entry but do have a second passport, what are the best options?

It has been mentioned many times on this northern Asia section that the wisest visa to get for most people who travel across the whole wiDth of Russia's with many ins and outs to the Stan's and Mongolia is a long dated (6 or 12 month) multi entry business visa.

Afaik russian transit visas are not available at borders and have fixed entry and exit dates making them very impractical. Also afaik Uk passport holders must apply for all Russian visas in the UK

What sort of Visa and which nationality? Remember a lot of the Russia Visa requirements differ by nationality.

I got a same day Russian transit visa in Uralsk, Kazakhstan in summer 2011. No hassles, very friendly. I also went with a friend to the embassy in UB where he got a transit visa in autumn 2010.

The general rule seems to be that if you have a car, and you are in a neighbouring country, and want a visa which starts pretty soon, you can get it.

But, I would strongly advise what Mr Colebatch has said - get a Russian visa before you leave. You dont need any business connection with Russia to get a business visa, and although it sounds complicated, it's just a case of paying someone to send you a piece of paper, then sending this to the visa agent. It probably wont cost much more than a couple of transit visas, and will save you money and a lot of hassle in the case that you woukd be stuck somewhere and have to corier your passport to / from home.

By the way it is worth adding - if you are not a dual national, concurrent passports are useful to have when travelling at the very least you can send one passport away while still being in possession of a valid one.

According to information from the embassy here (Iceland) they only give out business visa to people that have previously been to Russia. Double entry visa on the other hand you can get on your first application. I have been to Russia ones but my wife has not so double entry is what we can have for her. Those two entry we plan to use coming in from Ukraine and Mongolia. Can we get a new visa in Astana or Almaty for the third entrance? Anyone?

I have recently queried this same information with a UK visa service (for Russian visas) after reading it on a website. I have been assured that there is no such requirement to have previously visited Russia in order to get a multi-entry business visa.

I also understand that the Russian visa application process cannot commence more than 3 months from the commencement date of the visa. One way to get around this is to list the start date of the visa a a month or two before you actually plan to enter - provided that still leaves you enough time to complete your trip.

If you will be leaving the UK 3-months prior to entering Russia, get the visa to commence two-months after you leave England. That will give you a one-month window before you leave in which to apply for the visa.

I'm a German national and I was told by a number of agencies that I could not get a one year, multiple entry visa, because I had no prior Russian visa (Soviet times don't count).
Eventually, I found an agency that could do it with an invitation from a ministry, at an extra cost. My impression is that there is a bit of a grey area and it probably depends on how well connected the agency is.

But as boarder says, it is not true.

I never had a russian visa before and I got a multi entry business visa for one year.

I just had to go to an agency, which has contacts to the interior ministry!!!!

They get an letter of invitation from this ministry and you have your multi entry business visa
