What I chose...

Not the best prices but certainly the best selection - Maps, Travel Books, Guides and Travel Information - Stanfords

The following seem to be the best of what I saw. I'll let you know whether they're actually any good or not in a few months time!

Russia Road Atlas - Russia Road Atlas PAPERBACK - Maps, Travel Books, Guides and Travel Information - Stanfords - Stanfords Website - I think Stanfords is one of the few places outside Russia you'll find this.

I tried to get hold of the Altai Republic Road Atlas but its been out of stock at Stanfords for over 6 months now - Altai Republic Road Atlas - Maps, Travel Books, Guides and Travel Information - Stanfords - Stanfords Website

For an overview of Central Asia - Central Asia - Nelles Maps (ISBN: 9783865742117) | Map Stop | Top maps at a reasonable price in one place.

Kazakhstan (also covers a chunk of Uzbekistan & Kyrgyzstan)- Kazakhstan - Maps, Travel Books, Guides and Travel Information - Stanfords - Stanfords Website

Tajikistan - Tajikistan: 500K Regional Maps - Maps, Travel Books, Guides and Travel Information - Stanfords - Stanfords Website

Also - Pamirs - Maps, Travel Books, Guides and Travel Information - Stanfords - Stanfords Website

as above

Stanfords is the best place for maps of the region before you go.

Russia is a good place to buy maps of the region, but you need to find bookstores in major towns.

Kazakhstan is terrible for maps. Best place to buy maps of central asia is in Russia or Stanfords.

You can try the maps of "Reise know how" in Germany...very good and detailed travel-maps (recently updated) with geo-coordinates...perfect for use the bike because the paper is waterproof and cant rip.
I use them very often and can recommend them for bikers :-)

Lightbulb

Got a road atlas from Stanfords then scan or take a high res photo then print with a laser printer black or colour your choice on rite-in-the-rain paper. Tested in heat and rain over thousands of miles on front of fairing and still readable.
That's what I did and it is much lighter than hard laminated sheets (which can't be burned cleanly when you are done with the map.
P.s I also submerged the printed paper at home and froze it. 3 days later defrosted and as good as when it went in!good stuff, available in white, green and tan.

Hello I traveled for 39 countries with maps then i got a second hand iphone. For Russia u can download Yandex maps. U can even download a lot of cities (so then u dont need net) and area for free.

Or if u have google maps, even without a sim card, when u get wifi, zoom in in the road u gonna do and then it will work as well offline

By the way if u really want a good map ...just after u enter in the border go in a big city and u will found road maps, way cheaper then in europe but will be in Cyrillic alphabet (not so hard to guess btw)

I bought when i was in Rostov on Don .... i remeber there was no far east.
Now im going to Sahkalin but i guess i will found too

Cheers Teo

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
