Russian Customs Clearance in Zarubino

Sorry about the cross posting.

Has anybody taken the ferry from Korea (Sokcho) to Russia (Zarubino)?

We are booked with two motorbikes for Thursday 25 May 2006 and I am wanting any information about customs clearance, what to do, where to go etc.

I have read and keep a paper copy of the postings for the procedures for the Japan ferry in Vladivostok.

Thanks in advance

Brett

Hi, you can get information from Lars. His webpage is www.larsontheroad.com

@ Sabina: No, it is www.ontheroad.de :)

Brett: I only left russia from Zarubino, but I could not imagine any difficulties. All the custom paperwork was done in the small customs building which is easy to find. When we took the Ferry TO Sokcho, the custom and insurance paperwork was done by the ferry company.

Thanks guys,

I am hoping that a smaller city customs is going to be easier than in Vlad.

Lars did you ship your knobbs in to UB. We have had a quote from DHL to ship from Australia into Russian Far East at $1400 AUD

Brett,
Sorry I couldn't get you guys into Japan wihout a Carnet (does this qualify as a public apology?)

Sending just documents from Japan to Russia, I checked the prices for Mongolia too. Much less. At least from Japan, DHL charges for all of Russia at the same price. So shipping something to Vladivostok is the same as to Moscow. Mongolia, being entirely in Asia was a lot less.

Zarubino customs: Don't worry, the custom guys in Zarubino were really nice.

I shipped my tires with an ordinary shipment company (in my case www.schenker.com) and the costs were less than half compared to DHL (in my case about 200 USD if I remember correctly).

The drawback is that you will have to pick up the tires at the airport and do the custom business. In case you will stay with Sabina ("Gursed" www.mongolia-oneway.com - I can really recommend that place -): she knows the procedures and will probably come along with you - in fact she just picked my tires up for me and was really helpful in a number of other businesses as well (including in the quest for the tire workshop which was able to mount the new tires on my tubeless-rim).

Lars

Lars, Brett, etc - please post in the Shipping section - under Planning on the left menu - your bike shipping experiences - the details will help everyone in the future!

Also Border crossing details, same area.

Thanks! Grant
